Ellerbee Breaks CCAA Meet Record; Broncos Place 3rd

5/3/2014 6:00:00 PM

LA JOLLA, Calif. - With teammates and relatives filling the tiered grass seating to cheer him on, Justin Ellerbee broke the conference championship record for pole vault with a height of 17-5.

Repeating as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champion in that event, Ellerbee remains No. 1 in school history while moving up to No. 2 nationally for 2014. The Broncos' other automatic qualifier to nationals at this point, Austin Allen, finished second in the pole vault Saturday with a mark of 16-0.75. After the conclusion of the meet, Allen was selected as the CCAA Newcomer of the Year.

With the efforts of the vaulters and many others, the Broncos finished third overall with 125.5 points. Ahead of CPP were first-place Chico at 266 points and second-place UC San Diego at 177.5.

James Weiner finished as the leading point-getter for CPP during the three-day championship meet. A junior from Saugus, Weiner placed third in both the 100- and 200-meter races while helping the 4x100 relay finish second.

Sophomore Kyle Goodenough, a Chino Hills native, totaled 11 points for the Broncos, including five from the decathlon that finished Friday and then three points each from the long jump and 400-meter hurdles.

In the first track event of Saturday's schedule, the Broncos' 4x100 relay put together an impressive performance  while finishing just behind Chico State in a photo finish.

With Robert Weathers, Weiner, Louis Martin III and Austin Braunschweiger all running inspired races, CPP posted a 40.95 mark that ranks fourth all-time in school history. The Wildcats finished just one one-hundredth of a second faster at 40.94.

To finish Saturady's action, the Broncos 4x400 relay - featuring Brandon Washington, Robertino Salgado, Martin and Weiner - placed third with a "B' provisional time of 3:14.57.

Senior James Gonzalez set a personal best in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-8 to finish second in the CCAA Championships. Mitchell Sagely also added points for CPP in that event with a fifth-place finish.

Another career best came from Brian Crane, who placed third in the 400-meter dash final with a time of 48.61. Following closely behind was teammate Robertino Salgado, who crossed the line in 48.95 for fourth place.

The Broncos had a solid showing in the 5,000-meter race, including Mark Huizar place third at 15:00.15. Teammate Ryan Carrell finished sixth, crossing the line in 15:10.90.

Although the conference championships represented the last meet of the season for some, a number of Broncos will compete next weekend at Occidental for last chance opportunities to qualify for the national meet to be held later this month in Michigan.
