Volleyball Drops 3-2 Loss in CCAA Opener

POMONA, Calif. – Leading 2-1 at Kellogg Gym Friday in the conference opener, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team ended up dropping a 3-2 decision to Chico State.

It proved to be a back-and-forth match throughout as the two squads traded sets. The Broncos won sets No. 1 and No. 3 while the Wildcats took No. 2 and No. 4. Trailing 8-7 in the final frame, Chico rallied for five-consecutive points and finished with a 15-11 result in that set.

Junior middle blocker Christen Williams starred in CPP's offensive efforts, totaling 14 kills with a .565 attack percentage. Joining Williams in the double-digit kill category were Lauren Jones and Deanna Blaine

The Broncos totaled 13 blocks as compared to the Wildcats' eight. Williams also provided highlights in that area as well, tallying eight block assists. Nicoletta Stork set up the offense with 28 assists and Blaine put together a balanced performance, recording 23 digs to along with her 10 kills.

In the narrowly-contested first set, Stork provided a clutch ace and helped CPP build a modest run before the host team captured the 25-20 result. Chico reversed that momentum in the second frame, jumping out to a 16-9 lead before finishing at 25-19.

The Broncos finished with four service aces as a team Friday and two of them came in the third set. Alina Smith and Blaine contributed those two aces and that helped CPP cruise to a 25-18 result while taking a 2-1 set lead.

The fourth set proved to be close but the Chico defense remained strong as the visitors finished with 84 digs on the evening. CPP rallied for back-to-back blocks in the fifth to trim the Wildcats' lead to 12-10 but ultimately, Chico outlasted the Broncos.

CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State Stanislaus.
