POMONA, Calif. - Entering Tuesday's game with five-consecutive shutouts, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team had achieved ranking on the national level at the No. 22 spot.
The Broncos continue to set records as their 1-0 win over the Sea Lions of Point Loma improves their record to 5-0-1. The game also marks the sixth-straight shutout for CPP.
"The recent schedule was very difficult," head coach
Yossi Raz said. "Playing a lot of the top teams in Southern California and in our division, the boys not only competed very well, they also achieved a result that we desired."
In a game that can best be described as a defensive outing, the strong Pomona defense allowed only three shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper and California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer Player of the Week,
Fernando Pablo Quevedo collected two more saves which gives him a grand total of 23 on the year.
In the 84th minute, senior midfielder
Abiel Coronado found the back of the net as he received a beautiful cross from
Michael Torres. The play began with a free kick that got kicked back towards the sideline, where the Broncos were able to gain possession and send it back towards the goal as Torres found the open Coronado in front of the goal.
"I am very happy for Abi," Raz said. "He's been playing very well, and for him to show these qualities at a time when we needed them most is very rewarding for a coach."
The goal marks Coronado's first goal of the year, placing him in the stat book as one of four Broncos to score this year.
Both teams played a hard physical game as the Sea Lions ended the game with 16 fouls while CPP accumulated 17.
About the upcoming conference opener, Raz said: "We know that the CCAA is a whole new and different ballgame and we are looking forward to competing against the undefeated San Bernardino team this Friday."
The Broncos will begin their conference play at Kellogg Field on Friday, as they take on the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino. The match will be one of two for Cal Poly Pomona soccer as the women kick off first at 4:30 p.m.; the men follow with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
