Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – With Christian Gonzalez Diaz putting together an impressive Bronco debut, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team showcased a consistent offense Thursday in a 3-0 home win over Holy Names in the season opener.

The Broncos improve to 1-0-0 and up next, they'll take on Dixie State in a road matchup on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

On Thursday at Kellogg Field, the first shot of the game didn't come until the 17th minute. After that point, CPP quickly figured out the Hawks' defense and struck for the year's first goal at the 22:46 mark.

"It was a great collective effort by the team in limiting the top scorer from the PacWest and a quality team in Holy Names to minimum opportunity," Broncos' head coach Yossi Raz. "We still have work to do but I'm proud of this first step in the right direction. We also appreciate all of the community support with a good crowd tonight."

Serving as a catalyst all game, sophomore midfielder Mathew Perez set up Gonzalez Diaz with the ball along the right side of the box. Gonzalez Diaz made a quick strike with his right foot and slotted it past the HNU goalkeeper.

The Broncos continued to build momentum but the 1-0 edge remained the same into the halftime break.

Perez added another assist on the next goal but it was the individual play of Alexander Turkson that proved to be the highlight of that score. With the Hawks not expecting a shot from long distance, Turkson fired a long blast into the upper right corner of the net after it sailed over the keeper's head.

Gonzalez Diaz and the Broncos weren't finished with the scoring. Turkson combined with Jesus Tamayo on a pair of quick passes, which led to a one-timer by Gonzalez Diaz at the center of the box. The Hawks' goalie didn't stand a chance and the score moved to 3-0.

This marks the second-consecutive season that CPP has started its campaign with a victory over Holy Names. The Broncos will battle another PacWest opponent on Saturday at Dixie State.
