Williams Clutch in Broncos' 87-72 Victory

POMONA, Calif. - At Friday's Cancer Awareness Night at Kellogg Gym, the Broncos prevailed over Cal State Monterey Bay 87-72. Five Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball players scored in double figures and CPP was led by junior Mary Williams, who contributed a double-double performance.

Williams collected a career-high 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting and also added 11 rebounds in the home win. Ashley Lovett also secured a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Friday's victory also marked the 100th win as a Bronco for head coach Danelle Bishop

Jada Blackwell, Tyler Woods and Ariel Marsh all recorded double-digit point totals with 15, 13, and 12 respectively. Blackwell helped her teammates throughout the game, dishing out a career-high eight assists.

As a team, the Broncos shot 75.7 percent from the free throw line as they went 28-for-37.  The free throw difference is where the game was made as both teams sank 28 shots from the field. With Williams and Lovett leading the way, CPP outrebounded the Otters 44-32.

With the victory, the Broncos improved to a 13-4 mark overall and an 11-2 tally in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP remains in a tie for second place in the conference standings with Cal State Dominguez Hills. In Friday's result at Kellogg Gym, CSUMB dropped to a 2-11 conference record and have registered a 4-14 mark on the year.

Within seconds of the tipoff, the Otters' leading scorer Jenna Bandy had put CSUMB on the board. The Broncos answered back with a pair of baskets of their own and the intense first half was underway.

Lovett and Blackwell tossed in the next two baskets and that marked the first of nine lead changes in the game. With just less than five minutes to play in the half, Monterey Bay earned its largest advantage of the game with a 31-24 score.

CPP closed out the half strong though, getting a three-pointer from Marsh and then two late free throws by Lauren Goecke to bring the Otters' halftime edge to 38-37.

More free throws early in the second half returned the lead to the Broncos and the home team elevated its play through to the final buzzer. With CPP leading 62-59 about midway through the final period, the Broncos put together a 9-0 run that featured five points by Blackwell.

A three from Mian Dingle widended the CPP lead to 23 points - the largest margin of the game - and the Broncos wrapped up the 87-72 victory.

CPP will return to action Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Cal State East Bay.
