TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team dropped a four-set match to the Warriors of Stanislaus State on Saturday. CPP won the first set, but the hometown Warriors won the second, third, and fourth.
The Broncos currently hold an 11-7 overall record on the season, complete with a 7-3 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Their conference tally places them at third place in the CCAA. The Warriors, with the win, now 6-5 in conference play also has an overall 12-5 mark on the season.
The Broncos' leaders in the match were
Zoe Herrera, who posted a match-high 31 digs,
Alexa Hasen with 10 digs and a .300 attack percentage, and
Nicoletta Stork, who provided the Green and Gold with 25 assists. Herrera now has 1,422 digs in her career as a Bronco, good for second on CPP's all-time list. She sits just 95 digs shy of Kiting Kolar, who set the record between the 2004-07 seasons.
In the first set, the two squads had a tied score 11 times through the first 18 points. With the score tied at 18-18, the CPP squad recorded a seven-point run to finish the set at 25-18 and take a 1-0 set lead.
Despite taking a quick two-point lead, the Broncos were unable to hold it for long as the hometown Warriors tied it up at 2-2, again at 3-3, and once more at 4-4. Stan State then went on a six-point run and never looked back. The Broncos were able to gain back some leeway, making a 12-5 run at the end of the set, but the Warriors finished it at 25-21 in their favor.
The match was even keel as the Broncos and Warriors battled back-and-forth throughout. The third set saw the Turlock native Stanislaus State get three quick points to start it off. CPP was able to even things up at 5-5 and provide two more ties at 7-7 and 9-9. From there however the Warriors did not allow the visitors to Fitzpatrick Arena to even things up as each Bronco point was met by a pair at least one home point. The set was ultimately won by Stanislaus 25-20.
What would be the fourth and final set of the match also fell in the Warriors' favor by a score of 25-21. The Warriors had a few runs where they pieced together multiple points and therein lies their key to the set. CPP came just one point back of the home team multiple times, but finally with the score at 14-13, the Warriors jumped too far in front for CPP to catch. The Green and Gold did come within a couple points, but a couple of multiple-point runs placed the home team ahead and the final score of the set came at 25-21.
CPP will play next at Kellogg Arena on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. as they host the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. The game will mark CPP's Make-A-Wish night and will kick off a four-match homestand in Pomona.
