POMONA, Calif. – Tensions ran high on Friday night as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos hosted the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles for the semifinal round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Soccer Tournament. The game's final result was a 3-2 double overtime finish in the Broncos' favor.
With both men's and women's semifinal matches taking place at Kellogg Field on Friday, the whole day was abuzz with skillful playing, talented athletes, and high caliber competition.
With the victory, CPP will advance to Sunday's 3 p.m. tournament championship game against the No. 4 seeded Stanislaus State Warriors. Stan State topped the No. 1 seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills after a 1-1 game ended with a shootout. The Warriors bested the Toros 3-1 in those PKs.
Sunday's matchup will be the second time in as many seasons that the Broncos and Warriors have faced off in the CCAA Soccer Tournament Championship game. Last season, the two squads remained locked in a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes of competition. The match went into the penalty kicks where the Green and Gold triumphed 3-0, earning the CCAA Tournament Champion title.
Just one of Friday night's five goals was scored in the first half as Troy Dumlao of the Golden Eagles netted that first goal. A shot from his teammate rebounded off the crossbar and Dumlao was able to head it into the Broncos' net, putting his team up 1-0.
About 10 minutes after returning from the halftime break, the Green and Gold would post their first goal to even things up.
Kris Korich crossed the ball from the right side of the field to
Alexander Turkson, who sent the ball past CSULA's keeper to get the Broncos on the board.
With the score tied up at 1-1, Korich provided the Broncos with their go-ahead goal in the second half. With the clock reading 74:57, the senior would send in his second goal of the season after and an assist from
Aaron Macedo allowed him to do so. Macedo passed from the right side to Korich, who scored with a left-footed shot.
With the final minutes of the game winding down, the game would get tied up as Dumlao scored his second goal of the evening.
A whole overtime period came and went for the Broncos and their SoCal rivals, but neither team was able to get that extra push to get a goal in the opposing net. Not until the second overtime.
In the second overtime, with the clock reading just 24 seconds, the Green and Gold would earn their win. With his second goal of the game, Turkson dribbled the ball down field and passed to Macedo, who did an impressive deke of the CSULA defense and then passed to Perez. He then tapped the ball into the open feet of Turkson. The Ghana native then turned to his left and sent a rocket of a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Beyond the CCAA ChampionshipsOnce the conference postseason wraps up, the NCAA will unveil its tournament field on Monday, Nov. 9. The top six teams from the West Region will advance and the most recent rankings put CPP at No. 3.
