CPP Nets 85-80 Overtime Win Over Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - With playoffs looming ever closer and the CCAA race heating up, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured an 85-80 overtime victory over Cal State San Bernardino.

With the win, the Broncos also guaranteed themselves a seed no lower than No. 3 in the CCAA Championships Tournament to be held March 5 through March 7 in Stockton.

Thursday's win over the Coyotes saw four-of-five starters for CPP reach double-digit points, while also marking another double-double for Ashley Lovett. The senior posted 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in the competition.

Also with a stellar performance from the field was a team-leading Jada Blackwell, who posted 19 points in the game. Ariel Marsh contributed 18 points of her own while Tyler Woods added 17 points as well.

Lauren Goecke provided eight points for the Broncos and collected a team-high five assists. Coming off the bench, Mary Williams went 3-for-5 for CPP and added seven points of her own. Woods and Lovett dished out four assists each while Goecke secured a pair of steals in the matchup.

The win improves the Broncos to 19-6 overall and a 17-4 record in the CCAA.

Nobody can say the game was one-sided. That fact was proven by the simple fact that the lead changed 18 times and the game was tied at seven different points throughout.

Entering Thursday's matchup, the Coyotes had not lost after holding the lead with five minutes left or when they had posted a shooting mark over 40 percent.

The game began with a Woods jumper just seconds in and was answered with a three pointer from the Coyotes. Entering halftime, the score saw the Broncos trailing by three and the scoreboard reading 41-38.

Just before the first media timeout in the second half, CPP went on a 10-point run, its largest of the game. The run saw four different Bronos score. Throughout the game, the Coyotes' largest run was a five-point spurt.

In the waning minutes of the second period, the Broncos pulled even with CSUSB on a pair of successful free throws from Blackwell. Her two shots brought the score to 74-74.

Overtime began with back-to-back free throws for Marsh, both of which she sank. Then a seven-point spree for CPP all but sealed the Coyotes' fate. The home team did manage to post three more points, but Marsh finished the game with two more free throws with just three seconds to play.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday as they travel north for the final CCAA regular season game. CPP will play the role of visitor to Humboldt State as the Lumberjacks look to avenge their loss at Kellogg Gym earlier in the season.

Postseason Picture
The top six CCAA teams will advance to the conference tournament to be held in Stockton from March 5 through March 7 and the Broncos have clinched a spot in that event, Thursday's victory means they will have no worse than the #3 seed in the tournament. The NCAA Division II Tournament bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, March 8, with the top West Region squads earning spots.
