ANCHORAGE, Alaska – In the West Region title game Monday, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered a tough 81-58 loss to Cal Baptist. With the win, CBU advances into the NCAA Division II Elite Eight to be held in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The loss was not for a lack of effort on CPP's part.
Jada Blackwell led the Green and Gold with 24 points. Also with a strong showing was
Ashley Lovett, who earned her third double-double on the week, marking one in all three games of the tournament.
It marked the final collegiate game for the Broncos' six seniors, who put together tremendous careers at CPP. The group includes Blackwell, Lovett,
Ariel Marsh,
Lauren Goecke,
Mian Dingle and
Jordan Henry.
Despite the tough result to end the season at 21-9 overall, the Broncos certainly achieved a lot through the 2014-15 season. While advancing to the West Region title game for the third time in the last five years, CPP went 17-5 in conference play and put together an impressive 10-2 record at home.
Entering the first half Monday in Anchorage, the Broncos scored first on a Goecke bucket. The remainder of the half proved troublesome though as just 30.3 percent of their shots from the field fell. Blackwell's strong half came with all three of her shots from beyond the arc falling.
Where the Lancers shined in the half was in the steals category. They swiped the ball from the Green and Gold on nine occasions in the first period alone. Once the half was completed, the Broncos trailed the Lancers by eight points and the scoreboard read 35-27 in CBU's favor.
CPP was unable to close the gap in the second half on the Lancers, it appeared that for every move the Broncos tried, CBU had an answer. The Lancers' offense seemed unstoppable from beyond the arc, sinking over half of their attempts and even expanding their lead to 23 at end of the matchup.
In the game, the Broncos' final points came for Lovett, who sank a pair of free throws with 1:07 left the play. After her contribution, the Lancers added on five more points, giving the game its final 81-58 result.
