STOCKTON, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team fell 75-70 to Cal State East Bay in the first round matchup of the 2014-15 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Basketball Championships. The Broncos will await Sunday's selection show to air on NCAA.com at 7 p.m. The top eight teams in the West Region advance into the NCAA Tournament.
The top scorer for CPP in the matchup was CCAA Player of the Year
Jada Blackwell, who posted 26 points for the Broncos in the game on 7-for-16 shooting from the field. She added 11 free throws and 10 rebounds in the game as well earning a double-double.
Ariel Marsh as she racked up 16 points of her own in the contest.
Tyler Woods recorded eight points and
Mian Dingle contributed seven.
The Broncos registered four steals in the game and held the Pioneers to a 38.3 shooting percentage from the floor.
An advantageous foul for the Broncos kicked things off for CPP as Marsh sank the first point of the game from the free throw line. After starting the scoring in Stockton Arena, the Green and Gold went on a 7-0 run and forced the Pioneers to scramble for their first point.
With a strong offensive performance through the opening minutes of the game, the Broncos went into a media timeout with 11:39 on the clock and a 20-5 lead over the Pioneers.
The conference leading offense continued adding on throughout the remainder of the first half as the Broncos held a double-digit advantage throughout the vast majority of the half. They headed into the halftime break with a nine-point 38-29 lead over the visitors after a last second jumper from CSUEB pulled them within 10 points.
Coming out of the break, Blackwell kicked things off for the Broncos with a pair of successful shots from the line. However, the CPP win was never a guarantee as the Pioneers fought back in the second half. They showed the tenacity that brought them to the tournament, remaining within striking distance through the beginning of the half.
As the game progressed, CSUEB built momentum and a three-pointer with just under five minutes to play in the second half gave them the lead for the first time in the game.
The waning minutes of the game proved troublesome for the Broncos as they attempted to halt the productive East Bay offense. The Pioneers increased their lead to five and the final score settled at 75-70 in favor of the Pioneers.
