@CPPVB Unable to Grab a Win on Day Two in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Day two in the SpringHill Suites Invitational in Anchorage had the Broncos playing No. 5 Nebraska Kearney and host-school Alaska Anchorage.

Game one against the nationally-ranked Lopers proved to be a real exciting match as the Cal Poly Pomona squad won the first set but were ultimately bested in the match.

The second match with the hometown Seawolves showed a rough tournament end for the Broncos. They fell in three sets to their fellow team donning Green and Gold.

The Broncos held their own throughout the match against the fifth nationally ranked Nebraska Kearney Lopers. The first set had three early service aces by Deanna Blaine and an attack error that gave the Green and Gold a 5-1 lead.

UNK battled back and eventually tied the game up at 8-8. From there the game went back-and-forth. With the score tied at 23-23, a Lopers' service error and a Broncos' block gave CPP the final two points needed to win the set.

The remainder of the set provided a strong showing on both teams' parts. At seven different points through the set the score was tied. The final lead change happened with the score at 13-12 in favor of the Lopers and they would carry the lead through the remainder of the set until CPP fell 25-19.

In set no. 3, the Broncos scored first, but as the entire match has proven it would be a close game. A late push by the Green and Gold pulled them just three back, but a couple more kills would fall and the Lopers would win the set 25-21.

The fourth and final set of the match was a testament to the Broncos tenacity as a team. They battled and were able to remain within a few shots of their national-ranked opponents. At the end of the set CPP fell 25-19, but they were able to take set No. 1.

The final match of the tournament was between the Broncos and the hometown Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. The match was a three-set victory for the host-school.

CPP jumped to an early and unfortunately short-lived lead in the first set, going ahead 4-2. The Seawolves came back and caught the Broncos, however, and soon pulled ahead, steadily increasing their lead until the end of the set with a score of 25-16.

The second set showed a bit more life in the CPP squad. The hometown team jumped to an early 3-0 lead, but the Broncos came back and tied the set at 12-12. This inspired a four-point spree for the Seawolves though, and the visitors would be left to play catch-up.

The third and final set provided the Broncos with an early shot at the home team. Looking at the scoreboard, one would see it remained tied until it read 6-6.  From there however, the Seawolves would go on a 19-8 run that ended the game with a 25-14 score.

All-Tournament Team

The lone member of the Broncos on the All-Tournament team was Zoe Herrera. The senior libero was the defensive standout in the tournament. She provided her Green and Gold teammates with 79 total digs while also adding a pair of service aces.
