Broncos Dealt 3-0 Defeat By Coyotes Saturday

POMONA, Calif. – Despite close results in the final two sets, Cal Poly Pomona volleyball suffered a 3-0 home loss on Saturday against nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino.

With the result, the Broncos fall to 4-11 overall and 0-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Coyotes improve to 10-4 overall and 4-2 through league play.

Splitting the setting duties on Saturday were Alina Smith and Kalea Vizmanos, who collected assist totals of 13 and 12 respectively. Samantha Figueroa put together a stellar performance in digs, totaling 21. Alexandra Gresham connected on a team-high eight kills.

Leading the CSUSB offense was Malika O'Brien, who finished with 13 kills and a .722 hitting percentage. As a team, the Coyotes posted an attack percentage of .344.

Despite trailing 8-3 early in the opening frame, CPP put together a 4-1 run to trim the gap to 9-7. That spurt was capped off by a kill from Natalia Perry. The Coyotes finished strong though, taking the first set 25-14.

That momentum for the visitors carried into the second frame, when CSUSB jumped out to a 7-1 edge. The Broncos didn't back down though, turning a 19-13 gap into a slim 22-21 margin. Through the stretch, Desi Martin and Perry combined on two blocks, Kay Powell added a service ace and Andrea Bosnic recorded a kill. The Coyotes took advantage of a pair of CPP errors and finished with the 25-22 result.

The two squads traded points through the third set as the Broncos looked to extend the match into a fourth frame. A Gresham kill pulled CPP to within 20-18 but the Coyotes scored five of the final six points to wrap up the 3-0 victory.

The Broncos will play its next three matches away from home. First up is a Friday contest at Cal State San Marcos starting at 7 p.m.
