POMONA, Calif. – In an exciting finish to the 2016 season, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team secured a 3-2 comeback victory over Sonoma State on Saturday at Kellogg Arena.
Despite trailing 2-0, the Broncos handed the Seawolves just their fourth road loss. Sonoma ranks at No. 2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
CPP finished its 2016 campaign with a four-match winning streak. The Broncos' records settle at 9-17 overall and 5-12 in CCAA play.
Five Broncos collected double-digit kill totals on Saturday, including top performances from
Desi Martin and
Deanna Blaine. Martin totaled 14 kills with a .448 hitting percentage while Blaine posted 16 kills with a .316 mark.
Alina Smith racked up 38 assists while
Kay Powell contributed 24 of her own. Four Broncos earned double-digit dig totals, including a team-high 25 from
Samantha Figueroa. Martin led the blocking category with six and
Natalia Perry added five. CPP finished with 10 service aces, including three apiece by Blaine and
Andrea Bosnic.
The Broncos had multiple set points in the first frame but the Seawolves managed to take the extended 29-27 result. That momentum carried over to the second set, which Sonoma took 25-17.
CPP used a 7-1 through the middle of the third set to gain a 19-10 advantage. That run of points was capped off by a double block from Martin and Perry. In the final points of the 25-15 result,
Kristen Hamlin contributed a kill and Powell earned an ace.
A Bosnic ace put the Broncos up 11-5 and the home team cruised to a 25-18 result in the fourth. CPP continued to build its momentum and in the fifth,
Amanda Jaramillo knocked in a clutch ace to put the Broncos up 6-2. CPP kept that lead throughout the frame and finished with a 15-12 result to wrap up the comeback victory.
Without any seniors on the 2016 team, the Broncos will return plenty of top performers heading into the 2017 campaign. Among the statistical leaders for CPP this season,
Alexandra Gresham led in kills,
Kristen Hamlin led in hitting percentage,
Alina Smith led in assists,
Samantha Figueroa led in digs and
Desi Martin led in blocks.
