POMONA, Calif. – With a two-game winning streak to start conference play, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team will host Cal State San Marcos at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The Broncos will honor the 15th anniversary of the 2002 NCAA Division II National Championship team while also celebrating all alumna from the CPP women's basketball program and legendary coach, the late Darlene May.
It marks the start of a three-game homestand for the Broncos, who are 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Cougars of CSUSM are 4-3 overall and 2-1 through league play.
In the most recent meeting between the teams, CPP topped San Marcos 58-38 on Senior Night last season at Kellogg Arena.
Junior forward
Priscilla Brooks, a Riverside native, has taken over the top spot on the CCAA rebounding leaderboard. She averages 8.8 boards per contest, matching Cal State Monterey Bay's McKenna Hill at No. 1.
The Broncos' defense will look to limit the output of CSUSM senior guard Ashley Jenkins, who is the most recent CCAA Player of the Week honoree. Jenkins ranks at No. 8 on the conference leaderboard with an average of 13.1 points per game.
Chelsea Waddy-Blow owns a double-digit scoring average as well with a mark of 11.4. The CPP junior has raised her point total with a stellar free throw percentage of 85.3, sinking 29 of her 34 attempts.
As a team, the Broncos have knocked down 69.2 percent of their free throw attempts this season. That puts them at No. 4 in the CCAA for that category. Saturday's opponent – CSUSM – is second in the league with a 77.6 mark.
After focusing on one game this week, CPP will be a bit busier next week. The Broncos will be hosting Cal State East Bay on Dec. 15 and Cal State San Bernardino on Dec. 17.
