SAN FRANCISCO - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team splits the weekend after falling to the San Francisco State Gators 49-44 on Saturday. The contest took place at The Swamp, the Gators' home court.
The loss drops the Broncos to a season tally of 8-14, complete with a 6-9 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With the win in the game, the SFSU squad improves on their season record and now hold a 4-11 mark in conference play en route to their season showing of 6-15.
In the contest, the Broncos' defense outperformed that of the home town Gators. However, the offense of the San Francisco squad posted stronger numbers than the CPP offense.
The Green and Gold sank 15 shots in the showdown while the opposition sank 17. Breaking down the shooting performance, 10 of the Gator's 17 successful shots were taken from beyond the arc, while just one of the Broncos' seven long ones made it in.
The game did go back-and-forth a number of times and the scoreboard did see a total of five ties and 11 lead changes. In the third quarter the Gators took the lead for the final time in the contest. Neither team's lead ever reached double-digit points as the Broncos' offense maxed out at a seven-point advantage while that of the SFSU squad only led by nine.
Mary Williams and
Marshanique Hall each tallied 10 points in the contest for the Green and Gold.
Jordyn Shane was just behind them with nine points of her own. Rounding out the Bronco scorers in the showdown were
Priscilla Brooks,
Alyssa Benton, and
Jackie Ricketson who recorded eight, four, and three, respectively.
Brooks had another stellar showing on defense as she pulled down a game-leading 16 rebounds. Her 16 rebounds doubled the highest number of the opposing squads' defense.
Both teams were able to put together impressive runs in the contest, and each team registered a consecutive-point high of nine. To end the first quarter and enter the second, the CPP squad tallied a six-point spree and a nine pointer separated only by a Gator three.
Right after the Broncos' nine points the SFSU team added a nine-pointer of their own. CPP answered back with a few baskets of their own, but another nine-point spree from the home team cemented their lead.
The Broncos will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 11 as they host the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters for Faculty Staff Appreciation Night. The game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena.
