Broncos End CCAA Tourney in Semifinals

STOCKTON, Calif. – A 7-4 loss to the Cal State East Bay Pioneers ended the No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos' hopes of winning their second-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament Championship.

The NCAA Regional Selection Show will take place on Sunday and the Broncos will hope to maintain their current placement in the West Region.

Saturday's CCAA semifinal game with the Pioneers gave the Broncos loss No. 17 on the season, and they will enter Regionals with a mark of 36-17 on the season. CSUEB, who advances to play Chico State in the Saturday night game improved their season tally to 33-19.

Starting on the mound for the CPP team and dealing for five innings was Peter Bayer, the senior racked up eight strikeouts in his showing and surrendered just three hits and one run. After his performance, the ball was turned over to Matthew Grier who recorded the loss as he allowed three runs on a pair of hits in less than an inning of play.

After Grier, the CPP mound saw Wyatt Shackleford, Erik Trask, Zach Williams, and Tyler Rowe. After their starter went just a single inning and allowed a run, the Pioneers looked to Nick Sergi. The righty earned the win with a seven inning one run showing in which the Broncos registered six hits.

In the top of the first inning, Caleb Romo provided the Broncos with a run as he singled off the left field fence to bring home Jared James who had doubled to lead off the game.

Keeping things even, the Pioneer offense singled to the CPP shortstop and scored in the bottom of the first, the run was unearned however as the guy who came around to score reached via error. The score remained locked in the 1-1 tie until the sixth inning.

In the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Michael Zidek allowed for Ryan Webberley to score and for the Green and Gold to take the lead at 2-1.

Inning six and seven saw the CSUEB squad tally a total of six runs. In the sixth, a pair of singles scored three runs that pushed the Pioneers even and into the lead at 4-2. The seventh saw the East Bay first baseman crank a homerun to right field that scored their final three runs, bringing their total to seven.

In the ninth, with a nearly entirely new lineup, the CPP team added a couple of runs to the scoreboard as a groundout from Alex Gaskin scored Matt Reynoso and moved Frankie Nogales over. Both Reynoso and Nogales had singled in their at-bats.

The final run for the Green and Gold came on a single to left from Webberley in which Nogales scored. Total on the day, Nic Hernandez, the Broncos' first baseman tallied a flawless 4-for-4 at the plate. Webberley and Jacob Bernardy each added a pair of hits of their own.

After the tournament, CCAA officials released the All-Tournament Team. Making their way onto the team were three members of the CPP squad.
