POMONA, Calif. – After scoring just two goals through its first four games, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team found its offensive rhythm Saturday night in a 2-1 home win over Dominican.
The production came from junior midfielder
Sergi Monso, who collected both of the Broncos' scores at Kellogg Field. The catalysts were
Jordan Jackmon and
Kevin Martinez as they delivered assists on both of the goals in the same combination of passes.
Saturday's result raises Monso's career goal total to seven while the assists represent the first points for Jackmon and Martinez as Broncos. CPP will take a 3-1-1 record into Tuesday's home match against Fresno Pacific (1-0-1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The scoreless first half on Saturday played out relatively calm as the two squads combined for just seven shots and only two yellow cards were issued through the first 45 minutes.
At the 58:08 mark, Monso struck for his first goal of the night. Jackmon received a long pass from Martinez in the left corner and then he slipped a pass to Monso charging into the box. Monso dribbled along the end line and then ripped a close-range shot to the left of the diving Dominican goalkeeper to put CPP ahead 1-0.
Roughly four and a half minutes later, the Broncos navigated the same combination again for the game's second score. After Martinez found Jackmon again on the left side, Jackmon dropped a short pass back to Monso at the top left corner of the box. This time Monso didn't waste any effort but instead curled a 20-yard shot inside the far post.
The Penguins put a goal on the board in the 77th minute Zach Bush delivered a shot past CPP goalkeeper
Jason Trejos. That score escalated the intensity of the match and the amount of yellow cards handed out. In total, 11 yellow cards were issued with nine going to the visitor's side.
The Broncos' defense held tough and limited Dominican to zero shots through the final four minutes and 45 seconds.
