Game Recap: Volleyball |

Quick Start for CPP but Chaminade Wins, 3-1

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Despite taking the first game, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team ended up falling 3-1 at Chaminade on Friday night.

The Broncos (0-2) will look to bounce back Saturday when they play at Hawaii Pacific with a 10:30 p.m. Pacific (7:30 p.m. HST) first serve.

Junior Alexandra Gresham and sophomore Kristen Hamlin led the CPP attack on Friday. Gresham collected 11 kills with a .360 attack percentage while Hamlin hit .450 with 10 kills.  On defense, Samantha Figueroa tallied a team-best 16 digs and Andrea Bosnic added 14.

Ten service errors limited the Broncos' offense and Chaminade finished with a sizeable 8-2 advantage in total blocks.

The Broncos jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame as a spurt of CPP points pushed the margin to 17-9 after a service ace by Kalea Vizmanos.

Despite Chaminade making a run in the middle of the set, CPP called a timeout and then put a pair of consecutive points on the board to break the host's momentum and extend the Broncos' lead to 20-15 with an Andrea Bosnic kill.  CPP held off a late rally from the Swords to wrap up the 25-21 frame, which ended with a kill from Desi Martin.

The two teams were tied at 19-19 late in the second game but Chaminade rattled off six-consecutive points to build its own momentum.

The Chaminade offense continued to excel in the third game, which started 8-1 in the host's favor. CPP pulled to within 16-13 after a double block from Karah Griffiths and Kristen Hamlin but the Swords ended up cruising to a 25-15 margin in that frame.

Chaminade took a 16-8 lead early in the fourth but the Broncos didn't go quietly. A kill from Alina Smith and a pair of Gresham service aces cut the gap to 18-16, forcing a Swords' timeout. The host squad held off the late rally from CPP though, wrapping up the 3-1 result.
