POMONA, Calif. – In a showdown between two of the top teams in the NCAA Division II West Region, Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer played to a 0-0 draw with Cal State L.A. on Tuesday night at Kellogg Field.
In hte preseason NCAA D-II national rankings, CPP held the No. 4 spot while the Golden Eagles were featured at No. 24. The Broncos outshot Cal State L.A. 13-5 on Tuesday but couldn't find the go-ahead score. CPP will carry a 1-1-1 record into Thursday's road game against local rival Azusa Pacific (0-1-1).
The majority of the Broncos' scoring chances came in the second half, when the host squad pushed the tempo and delivered attempts closer to the target.
Roughly five minutes into the second half,
Dante Medina sent a ball up the line for
Jordan Jackmon. Dribbling and looking for teammates, Jackmon sent a cross into the box.
Sergi Monso received the pass but sent a shot just over the crossbar from about eight yards away.
At the 67:29 mark, a 10-yard shot from Medina was saved by Golden Eagles' keeper Dan Arnoll after a nice cross delivered from Monso.
After the game progressed into overtime, the extra periods didn't feature many legitimate chances. CPP outshot Cal State L.A. 3-0 in the final 20 minutes of action but only one shot was on goal. The best opportunity came early in the second overtime, when a cross rolled through the box but a sliding
Jose Garcia couldn't get a solid shot at the far post.
Although Broncos' goalkeeper
Jason Trejos only need to make one save on Tuesday, he collected his third career shutout in the 0-0 draw. The backline in front of Trejos helped limit the pressure from the CSULA offense.
Although the Broncos and Golden Eagles are conference rivals, Tuesday's matchup represented a non-conference contest. It marked the first meeting since CPP topped Cal State L.A. in the NCAA Tournament last year. The two squads will meet again on Friday, Oct. 21 in Los Angeles for their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game.
Similarly to the Broncos, the Golden Eagles will play a road game on Thursday at Concordia. CSULA now holds a 1-0-2 mark.
