CPP's Comeback Bid Falls Short in 72-62 Loss to East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. – Looking for their third straight win, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball came against a strong shooting performance by the Cal State East Bay Pioneers, losing 72-62 on the road on Saturday night.

The Broncos split the season series with East Bay, falling to 10-9 on the year, and 8-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Pioneers improve to 13-7, 10-3 CCAA.

Alyssa Benton recorded a season high 19 points to lead CPP, going 7-of-12 from the field including three three-pointers. She also added a team high nine rebounds to finish one shy of a double-double.

The Broncos led for a majority of the first quarter, building their largest lead at 12-5 with 5:22 left in the period.

As CSUEB chipped away at the lead, the Pioneers took their first advantage on Saturday after a bucket by Morgan Greene made it 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Three other Broncos scored nine points in Marshanique Hall, Chelsea Waddy-Blow and Jordan Kimbrough while Priscilla Brooks scored eight points with six rebounds.

The Pioneers continued to find ways to add to their lead, shooting 47 percent from the field and a 67 percent mark from 3-point range. Shomari Harris gave CSUEB 26 points to lead both squads while Greene finished with 16 points.

Down by as much as 24-points late in the third quarter, the Broncos found a spark in their offense, closing the gap to 65-62 with just over a minute and a half left in the game. Easy Bay shut down the Broncos in the final minute, using a 7-0 run to seal the victory.

The Broncos return to Kellogg Arena next week as they welcome in CSU Dominguez Hills and CSU Los Angeles on Thursday and Saturday.
