SAN RAMON, Calif. – The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) 2017 Hall of Fame Class features two Cal Poly Pomona legends in former coach and administrator Karen Miller and three time NCAA champion Debra Larsen.
Both honorees are also members of the Cal Poly Pomona Athletics Hall of Fame with Miller being inducted in 2014 and Larsen in 2016.
"It is truly an honor that two legendary Broncos have been selected to the CCAA Hall of Fame and we will have the opportunity to celebrate with them in June here in Pomona," said Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Brian Swanson.
Miller served as Cal Poly Pomona's head women's tennis coach from 1974-1984, guiding
the Broncos to consecutive Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National Championships in 1980 and 1981.
In 1985, Miller moved on from coaching and took on the role of athletic director at CPP, a position she held for 15 years. She became the CCAA's first-ever female director of athletics and played a major part in the Broncos' women's basketball NCAA titles in 1985 and 1986, and tennis titles in 1991 and 1992. Her tenure also saw one of the nation's top NCAA Division I softball teams make four NCAA World Series appearances.
"Karen, was an athletics game changer and was instrumental in six national championships – winning two and overseeing four more. Her deep care for and mentorship of thousands of student-athletes and her commitment to providing outstanding service is the cornerstone of our program today," continued Swanson.
Larsen, one of the most decorated female student-athletes in CCAA history, flourished during the 1984-87 seasons. A two sport athlete in women's basketball and track and field, Larsen earned seven All-America awards. She won back to back NCAA Division II National Championships in the 1984-85 season and again in the 1985-86 season. Larsen was a two-time CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year and the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Player of the year her senior year after averaging 16 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.
On the track side, Larson also won a Division II National Champion in the heptathlon in 1986. Larsen earned six of seven All-American accolades in track and field, taking honors in the heptathlon, high jump, javelin, long jump and the shot put and was also named the CCAA Athlete of the Year in 1986.
Larsen still holds the program record in the heptathlon and is tied for second in the high jump, third in the long jump, third in the shot put and fourth in the javelin.
"Debra, as a multiple-sport national champion, was the epitome of a Bronco student-athlete. Her drive, dedication and results are second-to-none in our very accomplished history. Both Karen and Debra certainly moved the CCAA forward on the national stage and are deserving of this award," added Swanson.
The CCAA will honor the five inductees on June 6, 2017 at the Pomona Mining Company in Pomona.
The CCAA Hall of Fame was created during the 2013-14 academic year, in conjunction with the celebration of the Conference's 75th Anniversary.
