POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics honored their student-athletes and their achievements at the annual Night of Excellence banquet on Monday in the Bronco Student Center's Ursa Major.
Sergi Monso of men's soccer and
Calene Morris of cross country/track & field soccer received recognition as the 2016-17 CPP Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
Monso, an NCAA DII All-American in the fall, recorded a team-high 12 goals, which tied him for the most in the CCAA. He also finished first on the team in total points (28), third in goals per game (.545) and fourth in shots per game (2.82). As the leader of the Broncos' offense, Monso led CPP to the NCAA West Region Title game, leading in every offensive category including points, assists, goals, shots, shots on goal, and game winning goals.
In track & field, Morris moved into second place on CPP's All-Time list in the 5,000-meter. She also claimed a silver medal and All-CCAA recognition in the 5K at the CCAA Track & Field Championships and will advance to Nationals held later this month in Florida. In cross country, her efforts led her team to a second-place finish at the CCAA Championships, taking fifth-place in the West Regional.
This year's Academic Excellence Team Award, which goes to the team with the highest overall GPA, was given to baseball who finished the year with a combined GPA of 3.24. Their season continues on Thursday as they advanced to the West Region Tournament held at Azusa Pacific.
Continuing on the academic side,
Eshel Chardon of men's soccer was named the Male Scholar-Athlete. Chardon earned CCAA All-Academic honors twice, received the Division II Athletic Director's Association Academic Achievement Award twice, was named to the Dean's List eight times and graduating with honors Cum Laude this spring.
Receiving Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year was
Erin Hagan of women's basketball. Hagan received CCAA All-Academic honors twice, earned the DII Athletic Director's Association Academic Achievement Award on two occasions, was named to the Dean's List seven times and has already graduated with honors Cum Laude during the winter quarter.
Every year the California Collegiate Athletic Association honors two student-athletes from each institution with the Dr. Hal Charnofsky Memorial Award, named after the long-time FAR at Cal State Dominguez Hills who passed away in February 2003. This award recognizes CCAA student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in their sport. Receiving the honor this year for CPP were
Mark Huizar of cross country and track & field, and earning her second award of the night,
Calene Morris.
Huizar helped lead the Broncos men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the CCAA Championships along with a third-place finish at the West Region Championships. In men's track & field, he set the CPP All-Time record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:03.96, received a silver medal in the 10,000 meter and a bronze medal in the 5,000 meter at the CCAA Championships.
