Long-time Bronco Athletics Fan Allen Lee Ackerman Passes

Allen Lee Ackerman, long-time friend and supporter of Cal Poly Pomona Athletics, passed away peacefully on Saturday April 29th at Pomona Valley Hospital.

Ackerman's ties to Cal Poly Pomona were centered on close friend and former Bronco Baseball Coach John Scolinos. Over the years Mr. Ackerman assisted with fund raising activities for the Broncos through his position with Van Munching & Company where he was a branch manager and Vice-President. Because of Allen's love for baseball and close relationship and friendship with former Cal Poly Pomona head baseball coach John Scolinos, in lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be sent to the Cal Poly Pomona Scolinos Baseball Endowment Fund. A link has been created for your use to make your gifts here.

"We appreciate the Ackerman family choosing to ask friends and family to remember Allen by supporting our baseball program," stated Cal Poly Pomona Director of Athletics Brian Swanson. "To remember Mr. Ackerman with gifts to the Scolinos Baseball Endowment is a fitting tribute to their friendship and mutual love of baseball in this area."

Ackerman also served as an official observer for athletic conferences in Southern California, including the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Raised in North Long Beach, Ackerman attended Compton H.S., Compton Jr. College and San Jose State College. He participated in Football, Basketball, Baseball and ran the High Hurdles in Track & Field. He was a member of the Sheriffs All Boys Band, playing in the Rose Parade and appearing in two movies during World War II with his trusty Clarinet or Saxophone. Allen met his future wife Phyllis Carr at Compton High School and were married on Jan. 28, 1951. They settled in Compton and moved to Claremont in 1962, where they raised their daughter Terry and two sons Dennis and Craig.

Allen's true passion was baseball, coaching many levels of baseball including many future Pro and Collegiate athletes. He scouted many years for the Twins, Angels, A's and Tigers. He coached Mark McGuire in Little League. He was a member of the Elks, a 50 year member of Claremont Keith Powell Post 78 and a member of the US Naval Reserve. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday May 27th at 11:00 am at the Todd Memorial Chapel in Claremont, 325 N. Indian Hill Blvd.
