SEASIDE – In what turned out to be a tough opening day, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team dropped two matches against Northwest Nazarene (3-0–25-19, 25-13, 25-15) and Metropolitan State (3-2–26-28, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9) on the first day of the Spring Hills Suites Otter Classic hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Broncos didn't make it easy, starting their season against two powerful teams in their respective conferences, combining for an overall record of 48-13 overall in 2016.
Junior
Andrea Bosnic led CPP in both matches, tallying seven kills against NNU before finishing with a high of 15 against Metro while
Alina Smith finished with a total of 60 assists on the day.
Match One: Northwest Nazarene 3, Cal Poly Pomona 0
CPP's offense struggled to open the season, posting a hitting percentage of .097 in the first match of the day. Along with Bosnic,
Alexandra Gresham also finished with seven kills, holding a hitting percentage of .267. Behind them was
Jenna Goldsberry making her Broncos debut, tallying six kills, seven digs and three aces.
Smith led the office with 25 assists while
Alexandria Bollier held down the back line with 16 digs.
Match Two: Metro State 3, Cal Poly Pomona 2
The Broncos improved drastically in the second match, moving their hitting percentage to .180, but errors continued to hold CPP back from victory.
CPP took the first two sets of the match, with four Broncos totaling double-digit kills. Bosnic led with 15 followed by Goldsberry with 13 kills while
Desi Martin and
Karah Griffiths each had 12 kills.
Smith continued a strong performance moving the ball with 35 assists while
Kay Powell added 24 of her own.
Samantha Figueroa concluded the day with one of her best performances, tallying 30 digs for CPP.
The Broncos will continue play at the Otter Classic tomorrow morning as they face off against Dixie State at 9 a.m. before playing Monterey Bay at 2 p.m.
