POMONA – Unable to hold on to a lead in the opening set, UC San Diego took advantage of a momentum swing as the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team fell in three sets (31-19, 25-14 and 26-24) at Kellogg Arena on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Broncos move to 6-8 overall on the year and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Leading 24-21 in the first set, CPP was unable to close it out as the Tritons scored three straight points to tie. The Broncos fought off three set points as they tried to take the early lead but were unsuccessful as UCSD took advantage of two CPP mistakes.
Alexandra Gresham finished the night with a team-high 13 kills for the Broncos while
Jenna Goldsberry and
Andrea Bosnic totaled eight and six kills respectively.
UCSD held an advantage in hitting percentage .206 compared to .089, and committed 15 errors to CPP's 30.
In what would be the final set of the night, the Broncos once again found themselves with a healthy lead, winning 8-2. A key 8-2 run by the Tritons midway through the set gave them their first lead 17-16 before scoring five straight points to seal the win.
Alina Smith collected 20 assists against UCSD while
Kay Powell finished with 17 of her own.
Alexandria Bollier tallied 22 digs to lead the back line for CPP.
The Broncos will complete their five-game home stand on Wednesday as they host #24 Cal State San Bernardino before traveling to Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills next weekend.
