POMONA -- Rebecca Islas drained 21 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds in her debut, lifting the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team to a convincing 70-54 victory over Point Loma in Friday's 2018-19 season opener at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos (1-0) will return to the Kellogg hardwood Saturday at 4:00 pm against Azusa Pacific, which defeated Cal State San Bernardino 68-53 in the first game of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge, hosted by CPP.
It was a tightly contested first half that saw the host Broncos up just two points, 33-31, at halftime. Right out of the intermission, Point Loma knotted the game up at 33-all, but that's when Cal Poly Pomona turned on the jets, going on an 18-6 run through the end of the third quarter to hold a 51-39 advantage with 10 minutes left in regulation. CPP eventually stretched its lead to as much as 17 points midway through the fourth before settling for the 14-point win at 70-54.
Islas went 7 for 11 from the field, including 5 for 7 from three-point range to lead all scorers in 30 minutes of action.
Monica Todd poured in 11 points and added six rebounds and four assists as
Kasey Smit and
Lauryn Catching each chipped in with 10 points.
For the game, CPP hit on 44.6 percent of its shots, hitting 25 of 56 attempts, including 9 of 21 from long range. Defensively, the Broncos held the Sea Lions to 34.5 percent from the floor and forced 15 turnovers, turning them into 13 points on the other end.
Point Loma was led by the 18 points of Sydney Peterson and 15 from Cara Liggins.
Cal Poly Pomona wraps up the annual CCAA/PacWest Challenge Saturday at 4:00 pm against Azusa Pacific in Kellogg Arena.
