Broncos' Late Push Not Enough In 1-0 Loss

POMONA -- Down by a goal late in the contest, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team used an all-out blitz of shot attempts in the final 25 minutes, one of which clipped the crossbar with five and a half minutes to go, but none of them would find the nylon as the Broncos suffered a 1-0 loss to visiting Point Loma Thursday night at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.  CPP falls to 1-2 this season while the Sea Lions picked up their first win of the season, rising to 1-1.

It took just 19 seconds before the Broncos fired a shot on goal, an attempt by Taylor Scott from the top of the penalty box, but it found the torso of Point Loma goalkeeper Emma Hinson to keep the scoreboard showing 0-0.

The first and only goal of the match came early, at the 13:53 mark to be exact, when Point Loma's Abbi Swanson served a corner kick deep into the goal box where Julia Glaser headed it home past CPP keeper Sydney Williams for the 1-0 lead.  It would end up being the only shot taken by PLNU in the opening half despite taking two more corner kicks before halftime.

The only other shot taken in the opening half came in the 39th minute off the foot of Natalie Di Angelo that sailed wide left.

The CPP intensity in the second half jumped up several notches, especially down the stretch when it began its flurry of shots at Hinson deep in PLNU territory.  Seven of the eight Cal Poly Pomona shots after halftime came in the final 25 minutes, and four of them (in addition to three corner kicks) in the final 10 minutes.  In fact, the Broncos found themselves with two corner kicks in the last minute, and with 10 seconds to play, Ambria Pogue served a ball into the box that Taylor Scott headed up and over the frame just before the final horn.

In the end, Point Loma held on for the narrow 1-0 win on a warm and humid night despite Cal Poly Pomona outshooting the visitors 10-4.  Both Williams and Hinson made two saves between their respective posts.

Cal Poly Pomona returns to the pitch Saturday at home against Azusa Pacific.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
