CHICO, Calif. -- Andrea Bosnic enjoyed her most impressive match of the year, firing 13 kills for a .435 hitting percentage and
Jenna Goldsberry added another double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs as the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team shocked host Chico State in three sets Friday night in Chico (25-21, 25-20, 25-12) in the CCAA opener for both teams.
With seven straight victories, the Broncos (8-1, 1-0 CCAA) have matched a program record for most consecutive wins via a 3-0 sweep.
Just as they have done in recent matches, the Broncos came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set, sprinting out to a large 8-1 lead right from the start. The Wildcats of Chico State (7-2, 0-1 CCAA) clawed right back into it, however, eventually forcing a 13-13 deadlock and both teams see-sawed the rest of the way. A kill by Chico's Makaela Keeve put the hosts down by one at 20-19, but the Broncos dug deep and rallied to clinch the first set win 25-21.
The second set was another back-and-forth affair, though Cal Poly Pomona continued to have the upper hand before going on a 10-4 run after already leading by two points midway through the set to later capture the second set with ease.
It was more of the same in what proved to be the night's final set. CPP jumped in front early and then posted nine unanswered points to open up a huge 19-8 lead. The Wildcats could not recover, and the Broncos held on to their double-digit lead, eventually winning 25-12 to complete the match sweep.
As a team, the Broncos hit .330, thanks to another stellar 34-assist effort by
Kira Zimmerman.
Alex Bollier and Goldsberry each tallied double-digit digs (10), and six different CPP players aced at least one serve for a team total of nine on the evening. The stifling defense held Chico to just .118 on the offensive side, which was their worst offensive output at home in Acker Gym since Nov. 10, 2015 against San Francisco State.
Cal Poly Pomona will put its streak on the line Saturday night at Stanislaus State. First serve from Turlock is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
