Broncos Secure Wild Win in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Despite trailing by eight points at halftime, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team used an impressive third quarter to push past Cal State San Bernardino and secure a thrilling 71-70 road victory on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Broncos have collected three-consecutive victories to improve their marks to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP remains in sole possession of second place in the CCAA. The Coyotes dropped to 4-8 overall and 3-5 in league play with Saturday's result.

As part of the one-point win, CPP committed just seven turnovers while forcing 18 from CSUSB. Offensively, Crystal Malveaux poured in 19 points off the bench with an 8-for-11 performance from the free throw line. Jordyn Shane added 18 points along with four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

The two squads engaged in a closely-contested first quarter, which ended with the Coyotes ahead 23-21. A fastbreak layup from Monica Todd at the 5:19 mark gave CPP a 13-10 edge but CSUSB rallied to quickly seize the lead back.

The Coyotes used a 8-1 run through the middle portion of the second quarter to build up a bigger lead and took a 39-31 advantage into halftime.

CSUSB's hopes for a home upset quickly dwindled though as the Broncos' offense came alive in the third quarter. Back-to-back free throws from Lauryn Catching gave CPP the final lead change of the game, putting the Broncos ahead 51-50 with 1:42 left in the third.

The Coyotes made it interesting in the final minutes, outscoring CPP 18-14 in the fourth quarter to close the gap. Ultimately though the Broncos held on for the 71-70 win. Malveaux proved to be the hero down the stretch as 14 of her 19 points came in the final two quarters.

CPP will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 10 with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Cal State East Bay.
