OFFICIAL CCAA RELEASE
CHICO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona head women's soccer coach
Jay Mason has been voted as the 2019 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Coach of the Year, headlining the annual CCAA All-Conference Team that the conference announced Thursday morning.
Nine Broncos were also featured on this year's All-CCAA Team, including two First Team selections in senior
Ambria Pogue and junior
Taylor Scott. Senior
Cassidy Overstreet and sophomore
Sydney Williams captured Second Team honors while five others earned a Honorable Mention -- juniors
Alyssa Carthan,
Jessica Llamas,
Amanda Faber and
Taylor Rasmussen, and sophomore
Allyssa Larkin.
The nine All-CCAA award winners in 2019 match the program record for most in one season, and the most since 2001. All nine Broncos on this year's All-CCAA Team are also first-time selections.
Mason has engineered a 13-win season by Cal Poly Pomona in 2019, nearly tripling the total number of wins from last season and has the Broncos in position to qualify for the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for just the fifth time in program history, and for the first time since 2014. The most recent NCAA West Region poll had CPP at No. 4 ahead of Monday's NCAA selection show that will unveil seven qualifying teams from the West to compete for the National Championship.
Ambria Pogue, from Simi Valley, is the team's second-leading scorer this season with four goals, adding three assists in 19 matches.
Taylor Scott, a native of Santa Clarita, is the CCAA leader in goals (12), points (28) and game-winning goals (7).
Allyssa Larkin, a native of Las Vegas, Nev., is the conference leader in assists with nine, adding two goals to her name in 15 matches played.
Cassidy Overstreet, from Glendora, is part of a defense that has dominated opposing offenses in 2019. Along with
Amanda Faber (Tustin),
Taylor Rasmussen (Orange),
Alyssa Carthan (Chino) and
Jessica Llamas (San Diego), in front of goalkeeper
Sydney Williams (Inglewood), the Broncos have only allowed two goals in 12 conference matches, a goals against average of 0.16, posting 10 shutouts, all of which lead the CCAA this season. In fact, Williams is ranked fifth in the nation in both goals against average (0.35) and save percentage (.903), both CCAA-bests.
Cal Poly Pomona, the No. 3 seed in the CCAA Tournament, will face No. 2 seed UC San Diego Friday night at 7:00 pm in the CCAA semifinals in La Jolla for the right to play in Sunday's CCAA title match.
