CPP Ends Season With Thrilling Win Over Chico

POMONA – After dropping the first two sets, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team used a furious rally to knock off Chico State in five (19-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 15-11) on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.

The Broncos end their 2019 campaign with an 8-16 overall record and 6-11 in CCAA action.  The Wildcats drop to 13-13 and 9-9 in the conference entering next weekend's CCAA Tournament in San Bernardino.

After falling in the first set 25-19, the Broncos held a 24-21 lead in set number two, but the Wildcats rallied to win the next four points to take a 25-24 lead.  The teams would see-saw back and forth until Chico State was able to steal the 28-26 win for the 2-0 match lead.

In the third, neither team led by more than two points until CPP took a 16-13 lead forcing a Chico State timeout.  The Broncos then forced another visitors' timeout at 21-17 before cruising to a 25-19 win.

The Broncos held control and momentum the entire fourth set to capture an identical 25-19 win to force the fifth and deciding set.  CPP scored the first three points, but Chico came back and scored the next four before the Broncos ended the rally and scored four unanswered points of their own to take a 7-4 lead and induce a Wildcats' timeout.  From then on, the teams went point for point until CPP scored two in a row to go up 12-10 and induce another Chico timeout.  However, the Broncos held on to that momentum, scoring three of the next four points to complete the comeback with a 15-11 win in the fifth to clinch the match.

Ally Wilder finished the night with a match-high 21 kills, followed by 14 kills from Jazminn Parrish and 10 from Daisy DukeKira Zimmerman set the offense for 46 assists while Brynn Sherbert recorded 19 digs.

Chico State was led by the 14 kills of Bekah Boyle, and 13 from both Kim Wright and Grace Shepherd.
