Women’s Hoops Grabs Third-Straight Victory

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona set the tone early Wednesday afternoon and rolled to a 68-52 victory over Concordia University of Irvine in non-conference play.

The Broncos improve to 6-2 on the year with their third-straight win, while the Eagles fall to 2-3.

Leilia Orji led CPP with a 20-point output on 10-of-16 shooting. Kasey Smit wasn't far behind her with 19 points on the night and snagged 11 rebounds. Jackie Ricketson had a solid night, posting 11 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists (with only one turnover) to almost complete a triple-double.

Ricketson got the scoring going for the Broncos and gave CPP the first significant lead, 13-7, with under three minutes left in the first. She forced an Eagle turnover and banked in a shot on the fast break.

CUI cut the lead to one possession, 20-17, halfway through the second quarter, but the Broncos responded with an 8-1 lead to jump in front by 10. Orji started the scoring spree with a layup and capped the run with a jump shot in the paint, 28-18.

The Broncos took their 10-point advantage into halftime, holding a 32-22 upper hand at the break.

Concordia tried to chip away at the lead and pulled within single digits, 42-34, but CPP was not about to let momentum swing the other way. Smit found Ricketson open under the basket to put the Broncos in front by 15 in the final seconds of the third.

In the final 10 minutes of action, CPP further created separation and took as high as a 21-point lead, 65-44, with four minutes to go. Sheridan Glover drained a shot off a Ricketson assist to give the Broncos the biggest lead of the night.

The Eagles managed to cut the margin down slightly, but CPP walked away with the 68-52 victory.

CPP returns to CCAA action in December, hosting Humboldt State on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m.
