POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona held a narrow lead at halftime, but No. 8 UC San Diego put together a solid second half to end the Broncos' win streak at six, 66-56, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's basketball action at Kellogg Arena on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA. UC San Diego took its third straight to improve to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in league play. Combined with Cal State East Bay's (9-4, 5-2 CCAA) 59-58 upset home loss to Stanislaus State a little earlier in the day, the Tritons moved into sole possession of first place. The Broncos, who were receiving votes just outside of the top 25 in both national polls this week, are tied for fourth with Cal State San Bernardino.
After not trailing for a single second over their previous four games, the Broncos finally did just that when Tyrell Roberts hit a three-pointer to make it 3-2 at the 18:18 mark. Junior
BJ Standley entered the game shortly after the first media timeout, and promptly hit his first shot, a banked-in three to tie the game at 7-7. A
Justin Young dunk followed by a
Tavian Henderson layup, both assisted by Standley, put CPP back on top at 11-9 as the Tritons called for time. That score remained until the under-12 media timeout, when the teams had combined for 13 turnovers.
Standley found
Riley Schaefer for a wide-open wing triple for 18-15, and the Broncos held onto an 18-17 edge at the under-eight break.
William Christmas found Schaefer, this time for a baseline three-pointer, to go up 21-19, but the home side found itself trailing 22-21 at the final media timeout of the period.
Moments later, Christmas gathered a defensive rebound, and on the other end,
Mason Dickerson found him underneath for finally his first basket of the game. On the ensuing trip, Standley drove the lane for the layup and a 25-22 edge. The Broncos' final possession began with a Dickerson steal in the corner, and ended with a pull-up jumper by
Phoenix Shackelford as they took a 27-24 lead into halftime.
Christian Oshita's one-handed floater opened the second, but Schaefer answered immediately with a three-point play. After a quick five points by the Tritons to overturn the Broncos' largest lead to that point of 30-26, Shackelford picked off an errant pass and drove the length of the court for the layup and the foul, hitting the free throw to go back in front, 33-31.
Two driving layups within 2:13, both by Standley, the first with the left hand and the second with the right, pushed the Broncos ahead 37-34 before Marek Sullivan's triple tied it for the Tritons heading into the timeout with under 11 minutes to go.
An 8-0 UC San Diego run, bookended by a pair of Oshita triples, gave the visitors their largest lead to that point of 45-39. Later in the period, the Triton advantage grew to 10 points for the first time, 56-46, on Roberts' three, as CPP called a timeout.
Cal Poly Pomona closed to within three at 56-49 as Christmas split a pair of free throws, and then notched a steal and a layup. He then answered a pair of Triton free throws with a three-pointer for 58-52 at 2:26, but the Broncos could get no closer as UC San Diego made all eight of its attempts from the charity stripe from there.
The Tritons did a good job on Christmas all afternoon, as the Bronco senior rallied late to avoid his season low, finishing with 11 points. Standley had team bests of 13 points and five assists. Schaefer was also in double figures, with 11 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds. CPP finished with 16 turnovers for the second game in a row, one shy of its season high.
UC San Diego managed zero points from its bench, as Roberts had a game-high 19, and Oshita and Sullivan added 17 apiece. Oshita posted a double-double in leading all players with 10 rebounds before fouling out.
Sunday's contest wraps up the 2019 calendar year around CCAA basketball. Cal Poly Pomona will begin 2020 in the Bay Area, playing at Sonoma State on Thursday, Jan. 2, at 7:30 p.m., and then at San Francisco State two days later.
