KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Cal Poly Pomona head women's soccer coach Jay Mason and his assistant coaches, Katie Smith and Dan Richards, have been named the 2019 NCAA Division II West Region Women's Coaching Staff of the Year, it was announced by the United Soccer Coaches organization Tuesday.

"We are humbled by the award with such a talented region full of great coaching staffs," Mason said.  "I would like to thank President Coley,  our administration, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning staff for their tireless hours of support.  I would also like to recognize all of the work Katie and Dan do behind the scenes to ensure that our girls are prepared and supported as student athletes here at CPP.  We are very fortunate to work within an athletic department with a rich tradition of success and look forward the continued growth the season's bring."

Mason, Smith and Richards engineered the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team to a 13-win season in 2019, nearly tripling the total number of wins from last season.  The Broncos qualified for the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament for just the fifth time in program history, and for the first time since 2014, snagging an at-large bid and a No. 4 seed in the West Region.

The program also set a new record for lowest goals against average for a season, posting a 0.55 GAA this year, besting the previous record of 0.58 set back in 2001.  Goalkeeper Sydney Williams also set the record for lowest individual goals against average for a season with a 0.52 GAA, topping the 2001 record of 0.57 set by Katie Kreps.

Nine CPP women's soccer student-athletes earned All-CCAA awards this season, matching the program record for most in one season, and the most since 2001.  All nine Broncos on this year's All-CCAA Team were also first-time selections.  Three Broncos -- Taylor Scott, Ambria Pogue and Taylor Rasmussen -- were also named to the 2019 D2 CCA All-West Region squad two weeks ago.

The Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award is voted on by other coaches in the region, who are also members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services program. Mason and his staff will now be placed onto the National Staff of the Year ballot. The voting for National Staff of the Year honors in Division II will begin December 10th. The National Staff of the Year will be announced on Dec. 20.
