POMONA -- Austin Isenhart allowed just two runs and struck out eight in seven innings of work and the offense scored three crucial insurance runs in the sixth inning after being tied at 1-1 early, lifting the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team to a 4-3 victory over previously undefeated and 20th-ranked San Francisco State on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon at Scolinos Field in Pomona.
The Broncos snap a six-game losing streak in improving to 12-14 overall and 10-10 in the CCAA. The Gators suffer their first loss of 2019, dropping to 12-1-1 and 10-1 in conference play.
CPP broke the scoreless tie in their first when
Patrick Flynn brought home
Brennan McKenzie with a single to left field. The Gators got the run back in the fourth inning, but then the Broncos exploded for three runs in the sixth on RBI from
Patrick Vizcaino,
Logan Gopperton and
Dante Palacio to take a 4-1 lead. SF State managed a run in the eighth on a solo home run to left, and another run on a second solo shot in the ninth, but
Mitch Hart was able to seal the win on the mound to earn his first save of the year after two innings on the mound in relief of Isenhart, who improved to 3-3 this season.
Cesar Lopez and McKenzie each had two hits on Sunday.
Cal Poly Pomona will hit the road next weekend for a four-game set at Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, beginning Friday at 2:00 pm.
