CHICO, Calif. --
The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics finished second in the 2018-19 Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup standings, marking the department's highest finish since it took home the trophy four years ago.

As a collective group, the Broncos scored 88.85 points, a little less than 10 points behind UC San Diego (98.48), which won the Cup for the eighth time since its inception in 2005-06.

The award, named in honor of former long-time Commissioner and CCAA Hall of Famer, Robert J. Hiegert, is given to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA's 13 championship sports.  An institution's Hiegert Cup ranking is calculated using its top two Conference finishes in the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, as well as the next two highest finishes, regardless of season. The specific number points garnered per sport is determined by the number of institutions that sponsor the sport.

Nine of the ten Cal Poly Pomona intercollegiate teams reached the postseason in 2018-19, contributing to CPP's second-highest finish in the history of the Hiegert Cup.  Highlighting the Broncos' efforts in the overall points standings was the men's soccer team capturing the CCAA's regular season championship, garnering the maximum 13 points a team can earn for winning the regular season title.  Men's basketball shared the regular season title with UC San Diego for 12.5 points while volleyball, women's basketball and men's track and field all took second place this academic year.

Placing third in the 2018-19 Hiegert Cup standings behind UCSD and CPP was Chico State with 83.3 points.  San Francisco State (72.73) and Cal State San Marcos (70.95) clinched fourth and fifth places, respectively.  The rest of the standings for this year's Cup can be found below.

The 2018-19 academic year was a very successful one in competition for Cal Poly Pomona athletics, as it produced 45 All-CCAA award winners, 36 All-West Region selections, 14 CCAA Athlete of the Week honorees and five All-Americans, in addition to all of the recognition for excellence in the classroom.
