From the Desk of Brian Swanson, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics:

The 2019-2020 season has arrived! Every year brings renewed excitement for Cal Poly Pomona Athletics. Our fall sport student-athletes arrived on campus for training camp on August 16th and we are well underway for another successful fall campaign. Our department has been busy with preparations and are eager to see what they'll accomplish this year!

As you probably know, the 2018-2019 year was a banner year for CPP Intercollegiate Athletics in the classroom, in competition, and in the community.

Classroom highlights include:
  • In May, 55 student-athletes graduated with representation from all eight colleges at CPP
  • CPP Athletics cumulative GPA for the first year of semester conversion: 3.04
  • Bronco Athletics had 59 All-CCAA, All-Academic award winners and 31 Division II Athletic Director's Association All-Academic honorees

Competitive highlights include:
  • The 6 teams that keep win-loss records achieved overall season records of 117-60-4, a 66% winning percentage; and an overall CCAA conference record of 84-41-4-2, a 67% winning percentage.
  • 9 of 10 teams advanced to the CCAA and/or NCAA playoffs
  • 5 All-Americans
  • 36 All-West Region honorees
  • 45 All-CCAA honorees
  • Men's Soccer won the CCAA regular season championship, the NCAA Division II Soccer West Regional, made an appearance in the Final Four in Pittsburgh, PA, and finished the season ranked #3 in the country
  • Women's Volleyball went 24-6, the best record in a decade, finished 2nd in the CCAA, and ended the year ranked 17th in the country
  • Men's basketball won the CCAA regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament
  • Women's Basketball finished 2nd in the CCAA and advanced to the NCAA T tournament
  • Men's Cross Country qualified for the NCAA national championships and finished 25th in the country
  • Men's Track and Field finished 2nd in the CCAA
  • Women's and Men's Track & Field had 8 student-athletes qualify for NCAA nationals
  • Baseball won the CCAA post-season tournament and was an automatic qualifier for the NCAA West Regional

Community service highlights include:
  • SAAC donating hundreds of items to the Bronco Food Pantry which serves members of the CPP community affected by food and housing insecurity
  • Track and Field hosted Valeria Gonzalez, a two-time Leukemia survivor with Team Impact. Valeria signed a letter of intent with the Track and Field program, and will spend the next two years as an honorary member of the team.
  • SAAC hosted several fundraisers at local restaurants throughout the year and raised money for the victims of last year's horrific wildfires in Southern California

We also made progress on our facilities which will improve our student-athlete experience for years to come.
  • Completed the Women's Soccer team room including benches, bag hooks and CPP branded graphics
  • Completely replaced the playing surface at Kellogg Stadium to improve gameplay and safety for our Men's and Women's Soccer Teams
  • Completed the Men's Basketball team room renovation with new LED lighting
  • Resurfaced the basketball floor in Kellogg Arena
  • Completed Phase 2 of Scolinos Field renovation including moving and replacing the backstop, installing a new field pro-style safety and netting system, new interior fencing, and completely replacing the playing surface with new grass and installing an artificial turf halo with the CPP Bronco logo
  • Instituted a 3-camera wireless streaming broadcast medium at home athletic events

As always, none of this could be done without the support of our university, alumni, former players, friends of our program and fans. I often hear the same question on campus, from alumni, and from fans in the community – How can I help? The answer is easy: Support our wonderful student-athletes!  Come to games, invest in the Bronco Athletic Fund, buy Bronco apparel, encourage businesses to become corporate partners. Your investment allows us to make a difference in the lives of our current and future student-athletes and allows us to continue to set the standard in the CCAA.

We are looking forward to another successful athletic year with more Bronco champions in the classroom, in competition, and in the community. See you at the game!  Please follow us at broncoathletics.com!

Go Broncos!
