LA JOLLA, Calif. — Coming off a five-game winning streak, Cal Poly Pomona looked to use that momentum as it took on UC San Diego Thursday night. The Broncos upset the then-No. 22-ranked Tritons to cap the 2019 portion of the season, but the Tritons returned the favor with an 82-68 result down in La Jolla, Calif.
CPP drops to 11-6 overall, 7-4 in the CCAA, while UCSD improves to 12-4 on the year and 8-3 in conference. The regular-season CCAA title is still up in the air, with the Broncos sitting in a tie for fourth with Sonoma State, while the Tritons moved into a tie for first place with Cal State East Bay and Cal State San Marcos.
Four Broncos finished the night in double figures, led by the duo of
Dominique Dotson (4-for-7) and
Lauryn Catching (3-for-8), who both had 14 points.
Jackie Ricketson (6-for-11) and
Kasey Smit (12 rebounds) each chipped in 13 points.
UCSD scored the first three points of the night, but CPP responded with six-straight points to take the lead, 6-3. Ricketson sparked the run with a put-back layup and followed with a jump shot just outside the key. Dotson then capped the spurt by going coast-to-coast after grabbing a defensive board and driving straight to the basket.
The Tritons took the lead back, but the Broncos stayed right on their tails. Less than 15 seconds into the second quarter,
Sheridan Glover stole the ball away to give Dotson the green light to drain a three and put CPP back within one, 19-18.
Things turned, however, as UCSD managed to get some stops and jump out to a double-digit lead late into the period. The Broncos cut the margin back into single digits just before halftime by ending the quarter with a
Jayda Villareal three and Smit jumper to go into halftime down 43-34.
CPP battled to keep things close coming out of the break and chipped away at the upper hand to pull back within two possessions about halfway through the fourth. Trailing 61-50, the Broncos scored seven unanswered points to keep things interesting, 61-57. It was the closest the Broncos would get though, as the Tritons took the game 82-68.
The Broncos turn right around for another tough test, taking on CSUSM on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip off.
