CPP Goes Wire-to-Wire with SF State

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal Poly Pomona grabbed its third-straight victory Saturday afternoon, downing San Francisco State 77-67 on the road.

The Broncos improve to 9-5 on the year and 5-3 in the CCAA, while the Gators drop to 1-10, 1-7 in conference.

Three Broncos finished the game in double figures as CPP led wire-to-wire. Jayda Villareal scored a game-high 24 points (8-for-14). Jackie Ricketson followed with 15 points (7-for-14), while Leilia Orji contributed another 10 points (5-for-6).

Villareal got the game going by drilling a shot from the perimeter before Orji grabbed a put-back to make it a 5-0 game early. SF State scored briefly, but the Broncos scored five more points to hold a 10-2 lead and set the tone for the game.

The Gators called a timeout, but the scoring spree didn't stop as Villareal knocked down another three and Ricketson found a lane to drive to the basket to give CPP a double-digit lead, 15-2.

CPP kept its distance and then some, jumping out to a 21-point cushion halfway through the second. Holding a 28-20 lead, the Broncos exploded on a 15-2 run to create major distance. A Villareal triple sparked the run, which saw Orji, Dominique Dotson and Lauryn Catching all getting in on the action to put the visitors up 43-22.

The Broncos took that 20-point lead into halftime, up 49-29.

SF State tried to cut the deficit coming out of the break and managed to pull within 67-55 heading into the final 10 minutes. The Gators put some pressure on the Broncos in the fourth, pulling within single digits, 74-67, with under three minutes left on the clock.

CPP was determined to keep the game out of reach and walk away with the win, however, and sealed the victory with a Ricketson layup and Dotson free throw, 77-67.

The Broncos return home to host Cal State L.A. on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tip off in Kellogg Arena.
