Broncos Too Much for Sonoma State, 82-52

POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team took full advantage of an overmatched Sonoma State squad and came away with an 82-52 decision in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest Saturday night at Kellogg Arena.

In completing the weekend home sweep, Cal Poly Pomona improved to 15-5 overall and 11-4 in the CCAA. Sonoma State, occupying last place following 14-consecutive losses, dropped to 3-18 overall and 2-14 in league play. CPP also ran away with the season's first meeting in Rohnert Park on Jan. 2, by the final score of 77-52.

With UC San Diego, Cal State San Bernardino and Chico State all victorious as well, the Broncos stay in sole possession of fourth, now two and a half games clear of Stanislaus State in fifth in the race for at minimum a CCAA Tournament home quarterfinal.

Cal Poly Pomona connected on a season-high 16 three-pointers, on 34 attempts for a .471 percentage.

The Broncos' scoring was extremely balanced, led by junior Phoenix Shackelford's 14, with all nine student-athletes who saw action tallying six or more. Senior Riley Schaefer added 13, with junior BJ Standley and sophomore Finn Eckhardt producing 10 each. It was a collegiate best for Eckhardt, coming off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting with a career-high-tying two of those 16 triples.

Redshirt freshman Demetrius Williams also hit a pair from long range, and is now shooting 75 percent (9-for-12) from three-point territory.

CPP had six players with at least two steals, of its 13 on the night, and the same in the assists category, among 21 in total. Schaefer's five helpers were a career best, and went for a share of the game high.

The home side got a three-pointer from senior Nikhil Peters, assisted by Schaefer, 17 seconds into the contest, and led for the remainder. The margin was as large as 18 for the first half, before settling at 16, 39-23.

Shackelford knocked down a shot from distance for the first points by either team in the second period. Moments later, Schaefer picked off a pass and went uncontested the other way for an easy flush and 46-25.

A scene Bronco fans have grown accustomed to had another installment at the 8:37 mark, as Standley set fellow junior Tavian Henderson up for a glorious alley-oop dunk, making it 70-43. CPP's largest cushion after the interval was 32 late prior to two game-ending Seawolf free throws.

Sonoma State's Isaac Davidson led all players with his 16 points, while Nick Klarman collected 14 points and a game-high seven boards.

Cal Poly Pomona hits the road again this week, facing arguably the most difficult trip in the CCAA as the Broncos travel all the way up to Arcata, and then back down to Turlock. Thursday night's tilt at Humboldt State is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip with coverage on the CCAA Network, either online (ccaanetwork.com), or by downloading the channel on Android, Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV.
