CARSON, Calif. - The 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team had its five-game win streak snapped by Cal State Dominguez Hills, 86-82 in overtime, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action on Thursday night at the Torodome.
Cal Poly Pomona drops to 18-6 overall and 14-5 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills improves to 12-13 overall and 8-11 in league play, remaining in strong contention for a CCAA Tournament berth.
UC San Diego's 62-55 victory at Cal State East Bay in a game that ended earlier in the evening, clinched a home quarterfinal for the Broncos to begin the CCAA tourney on Tuesday, March 3.
With Cal State San Bernardino also losing on the road, 75-63 at Cal State LA, and Chico State downing San Francisco State 80-69 at home, CPP now sits in a three-way tie for second with the Coyotes and Wildcats, behind the Tritons, who clinched the regular-season banner outright tonight. All four of those squads are assured home quarterfinals.
Fourth-year senior
William Christmas poured in a game-high 30 points, falling one shy of matching his career best. He shot 8-of-12 from the floor, 5-of-7 from three-point range and 9-of-11 at the line, adding six rebounds, the only two credited blocks in the contest, and a steal. His five made three-pointers were a personal record for his college days.
As a team, Cal Poly Pomona committed just eight turnovers, but allowed the hosts to shot 50.8 percent from the field. That equaled the season high by a Bronco opponent, with the squad coming in ranked third nationally in Division II in field goal percentage defense (39.4). Cal State San Bernardino had gone an identical 32-for-63 back on Jan. 25, also an overtime road setback.
The home side led for much of the evening, and the Broncos trailed by as many as 14 with just 4:58 to go in regulation at 67-53, before staging a furious rally to force the extra session.
Christmas' three-pointer started the fightback as he tallied 17 of his 30 over the final five minutes plus the overtime. His personal run indeed grew to eight as he scored in the paint and was fouled, knocking down the free throw following the under-four media timeout. Christmas followed that up with a layup, assisted by fellow senior
Riley Schaefer, whose steal ignited the fast break. Just like that, it was 67-61.
Down eight, junior
BJ Standley drilled a triple with 1:25 to go, and Christmas answered another Toro bucket with a pair of free throws for a five-point margin again heading into the final minute of regulation.
Nick Kornieck was successful on two free throws for the home side, ahead of a huge three-pointer by Bronco junior
Mason Dickerson. Wonder Smith and Christmas then each split a pair, but Dickerson got his hands on an offensive rebound and hit the layup after Smith turned the ball over, for 74-72.
Once again, the teams traded split free throws, with Gabriel Hicks for CSUDH and senior
Nikhil Peters for CPP. The Broncos fouled on the rebound of Peters' miss, and one more time, Smith could only manage one of two from the stripe to keep CPP hopes alive, down 76-73.
With 10 ticks left, who else but Christmas stepped up and tied the game via three-pointer, and the Toros could only muster a turnover after that.
The overtime began with two Christmas free throws, but Cal State Dominguez Hills notched the next seven points, five of them courtesy of Smith, and held on from there. A Peters triple closed the Broncos to 84-82 with under 10 seconds to go, but Hicks hit both his free throws.
The Broncos' biggest lead all night was three, 19-16, at the 11:46 mark of the first half, before the Toros grabbed a one-point edge to take into the locker room, 28-27. The hosts led the entirety of the second period, up until the Christmas three.
Schaefer (17) and Standley (14) joined Christmas in double figures, with Schaefer sharing game highs of nine rebounds and three steals. Standley had five assists and Schaefer dished out three. Peters added seven points.
Alex Garcia paced four Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes in double-digit scoring with his 20 points, while Smith fell just short of a triple-double with 17 points, nine boards, eight assists and three steals.
Cal Poly Pomona wraps up this tough late-season stretch of four games out of five away from home, this Saturday afternoon at Cal State LA. Tipoff inside University Gym is slated for 3 p.m. The contest is available, for a fee, on the
CCAA Network.
