CPP Secures Sweep Over Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES – Cal Poly Pomona grabbed its second win in a row Saturday afternoon, beating Cal State L.A. 56-52 to secure the sweep over the Eagles.

The Broncos improve to 17-9 overall, 13-7 in the CCAA, while the Golden Eagles drop to 10-16, 8-12 in conference.

Jackie Ricketson led the Broncos with 13 points, while Kasey Smit posted her ninth double-double of the year with 12 points (5-for-12) and 10 rebounds. Mylah Andrada provided a spark off the bench with 11 points (4-for-7, 3-for-6 three-pointers).

CPP out-rebounded CSULA 38-to-29 to win the glass.

The Broncos had to overcome a rough first quarter, shooting 20-percent from the floor to find themselves in a 13-8 hole after the first 10 minutes.

Less than four minutes into the second, things started to turn for the Broncos. Jayda Villareal banked in a jump shot and then stole the ball over to put Dominique Dotson in on the attack. It put the Broncos within one possession, 17-15.

The Eagles tried to keep their upper hand and built a five-point lead back, 28-23, but Villareal hit a free throw and Ricketson scored off a put-back just before the buzzer sounded to put CPP into halftime trailing just 28-26 at halftime.

Cal State L.A. jumped back in front by eight, 38-30, before Ricketson, Villareal and Smit combined for a 9-0 run to give CPP the lead briefly. The Eagles answered back, however, and held a 42-39 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

CPP scored eight-straight points in the fourth to jump out to a 48-44 upper hand with half of the quarter left to play.

With less than two minutes on the clock, CSULA tried to foul to get the ball back, but Ricketson hit four and Smit hit two free throws to seal the 56-52 victory for CPP.

The Broncos have just two games left before the postseason, hosting Cal State East Bay on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., before Cal State Monterey Bay comes to town Saturday – also at 5:30 p.m. – for Senior Night.
