CPP Hands Bishop 200th Bronco Win

POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona gave head coach Danelle Bishop her 200th career win with the Broncos after defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 62-53 Saturday night.

The Broncos finish the regular season with a 19-9 overall, 15-7 CCAA mark and head into the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Otters end the year with a 6-18, 6-16 record.

CPP honored six seniors prior to tip off: Lauryn Catching, Mylah Andrada, Jackie Ricketson, Que Vanhook, Dominique Dotson, and Kasey Smit. Two of those seniors led the charge for the Broncos with Smit and Ricketson each posting 11 points on the night. Vanhook posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, helping CPP out-rebound CSUMB by one, 45-44.

Both teams had to try to shake off a tough first quarter, with the Otters holding a close 12-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The Broncos turned things around, while keeping things difficult for the Otters. CPP out-scored CSUMB 20-4 to go into halftime with a 31-16 cushion. Smit got the quarter going with a layup in the paint, before Ricketson sparked a 10-0 run to push the Broncos' lead to double-digits, 25-14.

CPP ended the first half on a six-point scoring spree and carried that momentum into the third quarter. Ricketson banked in a shot just 30 seconds into the frame to put the Broncos up by 17 points.

The Otters managed to chip away at the upper hand, cutting the margin all the way down to four points, 35-31, halfway through the third.

CPP kept trying to create some separation from CSUMB and got it heading down the stretch in the fourth. After the Otters pulled within four, Vanhook scored six unanswered points to push the lead to 55-45 with just under four and a half minutes left on the clock.

Villareal came up big with a triple with less than 20 seconds on the clock, all but sealing the 62-53 victory for the Broncos.

CPP hosts the first round of the CCAA tournament on Tuesday, tipping off against Stanislaus State at 5:30 p.m.
