Broncos Rally to Snatch Another Road Win

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team overturned a 12-point halftime deficit and got five clutch points late from Phoenix Shackelford to nip Stanislaus State, 60-57, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest Saturday night at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

A fourth-straight win moves Cal Poly Pomona to 17-5 overall and 13-4 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State fell from fifth to sixth place, now at 13-10 overall and an even 9-9 in league play after a fourth loss in a row.

The Broncos remain in third in the standings, one game back of second-place Cal State San Bernardino, a 94-72 winner at Humboldt State.

Shackelford, a junior out of Fairfield, less than 100 miles north of Turlock, hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 19.4 seconds to go, after Ty Davis had broken a 55-55 deadlock for the home side just moments before. The shot from the left baseline appeared to glance as gently as can be off the upper left side of the backboard, and drop in nonetheless.

The Warriors came up empty on the other end, and Shackleford then made no mistake with a pair of free throws with 7.3 ticks left for 60-57. The hosts were unable to produce a shot on their final possession. Shackelford finished with 14 points, shooting 4-of-7 from three-point range, to go along with three boards, two assists and two steals.

Tavian Henderson nearly posted a double-double with game and season highs of 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The last of those points came on the put-back dunk of a missed three-pointer by fellow junior newcomer BJ Standley, to tie it at 55-55. He went 7-for-8 from the floor, and had a plus-minus of 13 to lead all players.

Cal Poly Pomona managed to pull out the win despite shooting a season-low 36.7 percent (22-60).

The visitors scored the first five points of the night on a three-pointer and dunk by fourth-year seniors Nikhil Peters and Justin Young, respectively. Stanislaus State used a 12-0 run to help build a 14-point lead late in the first half, however, and took a 40-28 advantage into the locker room. The Warriors shot 56 percent (14-25) from the field in the period, and knocked down six of their eight tries from beyond the arc.

The halftime box score for the Broncos looked very interesting, as nine of the 10 student-athletes to see action got in the scorebook, with eight of them making exactly one basket, and Henderson connecting on two.

The first bucket of the second half came from Stanislaus State, but Cal Poly Pomona reengaged in the contest thanks to a 10-0 stretch of its own from there that made it a 42-38 game at the 15:21 mark. A Shackelford triple pulled the Broncos even again, 48-48, at 8:40. Benno Zecic split a pair of free throws for the home side ahead of senior William Christmas' put-back layup off his own miss that gave CPP back the 50-49 edge.

Moments later, Christmas threw down a dunk, was fouled, and hit the free throw for a 53-49 lead. The Warriors notched the next six points, before Henderson tied it up again to set up Shackelford's heroics.

Christmas provided nine points, seven rebounds and three assists while appearing in a reserve role for the fourth-consecutive game. Standley had five points, four boards and a game-high five assists.

Davis and Xavier Francois tallied 11 points and three assists apiece for Stan State while combining for 15 rebounds. Zecic added 10 points.

Cal Poly Pomona makes a brief one-game return home to Kellogg Arena this week, hosting 24th-ranked and fourth-place Chico State (17-5, 12-4 CCAA) on Thursday night at approximately 7:30 p.m. The CPP women begin the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Both games are free to watch on the CCAA Network, either online (ccaanetwork.com), or by downloading the channel on Android, Roku, Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV. Entry is free for Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty and staff.
