POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, in consultation with the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Presidents/Chancellor Board, has made the decision to officially cancel all competition, non-conference and conference sport competitions, as well as CCAA Championships through the end of the 2019-20 academic calendar, due to continuing developments related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In addition, all countable athletic related activities (CARA) are prohibited for all sports until May 31, 2020.
Furthermore, the CCAA prohibits on or off-campus in-person recruiting through May 31, 2020. This does not prohibit written or virtual communication following NCAA recruitment guidelines with prospective student-athletes during this time period.
This decision follows both the CCAA's earlier decision to suspend all sports until further notice, and the decision by the NCAA to cancel the Division II men's and women's 2020 NCAA basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships.
"While we know today's developments are disappointing for our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans, Cal Poly Pomona Intercollegiate Athletics is in full support the of the CCAA and the NCAA in canceling all athletically related activities for the remainder of the academic year and believe these precautions are in everyone's best interest," said CPP Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Brian Swanson. "It is imperative that we stay focused on the most important objective; the health and safety of our campus and community. We are committed to the overall health and well-being of our student-athletes, and providing them with all the support that they need during this continually evolving, unpredictable and unprecedented time."
In addition to the cancellation of sport competitions, practices for all teams have been terminated for the remainder of the academic year. Upcoming
camps and events, including the Bronco Golf Classic (Apr. 13), the Night of Excellence Student-Athlete Banquet (Apr. 27), and the Senior Breakfast (May 4) have also been canceled.
While there are no confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 at Cal Poly Pomona at the time of this release, the University has transitioned to virtual and/or remote modes of instruction, effective today (Mar. 18) through the end of the 2020 spring semester. Aligning with the University's decision to practice social distancing and reduce the number of individuals who need to be present throughout the campus, all employees of the Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics -- both coaches and administrative staff members -- will be working remotely and will not be on campus, effective today (Mar. 18). On Mar. 13, the NCAA Division II Administrative Committee granted an additional season of eligibility to student-athletes in spring sports, and waived sports sponsorship requirements for institutions canceling spring seasons. The committee also announced the implementation of a recruiting dead period in all sports, which the CCAA today set as May 31, 2020. Until the dead period is lifted, the NCAA and the CCAA prohibits coaches in all sports from the following: engaging in official and/or unofficial visits (previously approved visits must be canceled), off-campus contacts/evaluations, speaking engagements or banquets where prospective student-athletes are present, tryouts, camps/clinics, as well as National Letter of Intent/Athletic Grant-In-Aid signing. NLIs issued and signed by prospective student-athletes before March 16, 2020 will still be managed through the normal validation processes of the CCAA.
In the interest of student-athlete welfare, CCAA coaches are encouraged to reach out and communicate with current student-athletes during this time period to offer support as they go through these unprecedented times. Activation of NCAA D2 bylaw 17.02.17 (Voluntary Athletically Related Activities) is permitted, however, institutions should be mindful of the restrictions set forth in that bylaw.
