OFFICIAL CCAA RELEASE
CALIFORNIA -- Cal Poly Pomona's
Ayana Fields,
Ana Tovi,
Zaria Francis and
Charisma Byrd were selected to the 2020 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Track & Field All-Star Team, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday.
With the global COVID-19 pandemic suspending and subsequently ending the 2019-20 college athletics season in mid-March, it became an impossibility to properly bestow all-conference honors for spring sports. As a result, the CCAA is pleased to announce the first, and hopefully last, CCAA Women's Track & Field All-Star Team, in a fun effort to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments across the league during the abbreviated 2020 campaign.
The list of 32 student-athletes mirrors the championship roster size for CCAA track & field, and is not bound by specific events. All 13 programs were guaranteed one representative to showcase talent across the league. These standout performers were submitted for consideration by the league's women's track & field sports information contacts, with additional nominees listed, by school, at the bottom.
With four honorees, the Broncos had the third-most student-athletes recognized on the CCAA All-Star Team behind Stanislaus State (seven selections) and UC San Diego (five selections).
Sophomore
Ayana Fields secured a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the 200 Meters in the pandemic-shortened outdoor season, running a Division II-best time of 24.00. She had also been selected to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in both the 200 Meters and 400 Meters and was on site at Nationals in Alabama ready to compete before the NCAA canceled the winter and spring championships.
Sophomore
Ana Tovi also captured a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the Discus, setting the third-best mark in all of Division II with a throw of 46.28 meters. She also led the CCAA in the Shot Put with a personal-best mark of 13.77 meters.
Junior
Zaria Francis earned a spot on the CCAA All-Star Team by running a 12.02 in the 100 Meter Dash, the second-fastest time in the CCAA this spring. She was also a member of the fastest 4x100 Relay Team in the CCAA, which ran a 47.48 at the Beach Opener on Mar. 7.
Senior
Charisma Byrd was ranked second in the CCAA in the Heptathlon after scoring a personal-record 4,326 points at the Chico Multis on Feb. 27.
The All-Stars are selected based solely on performances and marks achieved during the shortened spring season, therefore some big names in the sport are absent based on the limited number of competition dates. Each individual picked has a worthy standard set during the 2020 outdoor season to earn their All-Star selection.
