OFFICIAL CCAA RELEASE
CALIFORNIA -- A league-best eight Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field student-athletes were named to the 2020 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Track & Field All-Star Team, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday.
With the global COVID-19 pandemic suspending and subsequently ending the 2019-20 college athletics season in mid-March, it became an impossibility to properly bestow all-conference honors for spring sports. As a result, the CCAA is pleased to announce the first, and hopefully last, CCAAÂ Men's Track & Field All-Star Team, in a fun effort to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments across the league during the abbreviated 2020 campaign.
The list of 32 student-athletes mirrors the championship roster size for CCAA track & field, and is not bound by specific events. All nine men's track & field programs were guaranteed one representative to showcase talent across the league. These standout performers were submitted for consideration by the league's men's track & field sports information contacts, with additional nominees listed, by school, at the bottom.
The Broncos had the most student-athletes recognized on the CCAA All-Star Team ahead of UC San Diego (six selections), Cal State LA (five selections) and Chico State (four selections).
Ryan Fields (52.82 sec) and
Kaelin Moore (53.01 sec) sit first and second in all of Division II, respectively, in the 400 Meter Hurdles, with Moore opening 2020 as the defending CCAA champion in the event. Both earned provisional marks in the Hurdles.
Competing in the 100, 200 and both 4x100 and 4x400 Relays in the early-goings of the season was sprinter
Kyle Johnston. Third in the CCAA at the 200 meter distance with a personal-record time of 21.78 at the Beach Opener on Mar. 7, Johnson, along with fellow CPP All-Stars Fields and Moore, raced to a Division II-best time in the 4x400 meter relay (3:14.56).
Alejandro Ambrosio led the way in the 1,500 meters with a mark of 3:55.44 to top the conference and national performance lists.
Kyle Lawson, an All-American in the Decathlon a season ago, had his sights set on a second-straight All-America performance at Nationals this season, garnering a NCAA Division II-best 6,833 points in the Decathlon at the Chico State Multis, which was a provisional-qualifier. Lawson also led the conference -- and ranked seventh nationally -- in the javelin with a mark of 54.62 meters, also set at the Chico Multis on Feb. 27. The senior was also sixth in the nation in the Pole Vault following his overall Decathlon effort in Chico.
Newcomer
Matteo Madrassi earned a spot on the All-Star Team after setting a provisional-qualifying mark in the Pole Vault, a mark of 5.05 meters, which is good for No. 2 in the nation.
Aaron Guerra-Garcia set a provisional-qualifier in the Hammer with the fourth-best throw in the nation (55.90m).
Rounding out the All-Stars from Cal Poly Pomona was
Anthony Victa, setting a NCAA provisional-qualfying mark in the triple jump, marking a 14.69m leap, the second-best in the nation.
The All-Stars are selected based solely on performances and marks achieved during the shortened spring season, therefore some big names in the sport are absent based on the limited number of competition dates. Each individual picked has a worthy standard set during the 2020 outdoor season to earn their All-Star selection.
Impressively, of the 28 NCAA Division II men's track & field automatic and provisional qualifying marks, 18 belong to CCAA student-athletes.
