POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team scored once in each half and cruised past area rival Cal State San Bernardino, 2-0, at Kellogg Stadium on Thursday evening for its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) triumph of the 2021 campaign.
In wrapping up a three-game home stand, the Broncos improve to 5-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the CCAA. The Coyotes fall to 2-8-1 overall and a still-winless 0-4-1 in league play. They are now 0-7-1 over their last eight, having dropped three in a row. The Broncos had also blanked the Coyotes at home by the same scoreline in a non-league affair in both teams' season debut back on Sept. 2.
Cal State San Bernardino nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute, as the game's first corner kick, by Emelie Peraza on the right side, generated its initial shot, only for sophomore forward Nathaly Losada Lucumi to have her glancing near-post header hit the right post.
Seconds later on the opposite end,
Allyssa Larkin had her left-footed floater caught by junior Coyote goalkeeper Carly Luna, as the Cal Poly Pomona senior dribbled almost the length of the field after taking an
Amanda Faber pass out of her own penalty area.
Less than a minute and a half after that, at the 8:16 mark, Larkin headed in for her second goal of the season, breaking a scoreless drought by the hosts of 265:36 following back-to-back goalless deadlocks. She was assisted by fellow seniors
Elise Garcia and
Taylor Scott, with Garcia providing a lofted ball from left to right, and Scott right-footing a one-touch pass back across the middle for Larkin to nod home from around the left post. It was Scott's team-best fifth helper, and Garcia's third. Larkin's first goal had served as the clincher in the September meeting.
A left-sided Garcia corner kick almost set up the Broncos' second in the 19th, but
Emma Barrow, who incidentally had notched the first-half winner in that earlier matchup, saw her header cleared off the back post by defender Rebeca Cruz.
CPP held a 7-2 shot advantage at the break, with four of them target.
The visitors had an opportunity to equalize in the 59th minute, with Alissa Torres' delicate through ball up the middle sending McKenzie Cooper into the Bronco penalty box, but
Sydney Williams was able to grab her left-footed shot.
At 63:54, however, it was 2-0 Cal Poly Pomona. True freshman
Melanie Harradine, who entered the contest for the first time 130 seconds prior, passed up the middle into the 18-yard box, and senior teammate
Jessica Llamas ran onto the ball and flicked it over the oncoming Luna for her first goal of the season. It was Harradine's first collegiate assist.
Senior
Jillian Erwin, who had just come on herself, whipped in a 75th-minute free kick that Luna could only punch down in front of her, but Barrow's attempt sailed over the crossbar. Another left-sided Erwin free kick in the 81st was headed by
Krista Eberle into Luna's arms.
Williams made one save in earning her fifth clean sheet of 2021 and third in succession, her shutout streak now sitting at 310:00. The senior also picked up her 20th career victory between the CPP posts. Luna was credited with five stops for CSUSB. The final shot tally was 11-4.
Cal Poly Pomona now heads out of town to kick off a season-long three-match road swing, starting at Cal State San Marcos (5-2-2, 1-2-2 CCAA) this Sunday, Oct. 17. Kickoff at The Cage is set for 11:30 a.m.
