POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team surrendered a late goal against the run of play and dropped a frustrating 1-0 decision to Humboldt State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest at Kellogg Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Coming in, the Broncos were winners of four straight and an unbeaten 4-0-2 over their last six without surrendering a single goal, while the Lumberjacks had totaled one goal scored over a six-match losing skid and had gone 0-6-3 while getting outscored 15-3 over their last nine.
But that's why you play the games.
With the result, the Broncos are 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the CCAA. Humboldt State improves to 4-8-4 overall and is finally in the win column in league play at 1-6-2.
CPP's run of form had earned it the No. 5 position in the NCAA's first official Division II West Region poll, which was released on Wednesday. The top six teams in the final version of that listing on Nov. 15, qualify for the 56-team NCAA Championship field. The Broncos also began and ended the match in fifth in the conference table. The top six there advance to the 2021 CCAA Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona and Kellogg Stadium play host to the semifinals on Nov. 12 and final on Nov. 14.
Over the first 15 minutes on Friday, seniors
Taylor Scott and
Jessica Llamas had shots from distance for the Broncos that were easily saved and instantly blocked down by a defender, respectively. The guest side's first attempt was a high one by Clara Lenihan in the 12th.
In the 23rd minute came arguably the best scoring opportunity of the first half, as sophomore Baylee Groom had a left-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area go narrowly wide of
Sydney Williams' left post.
In the 31st,
Sydney Kallmann took a pass from fellow substitute
Nicolle Villarreal, but her 15-yard try from the right diagonal was caught.
Groom again tested the Broncos' senior goalkeeper right at the 41-minute mark, her right-footer from about 25 yards being tipped away for the game's lone corner kick by a diving Williams to her right.
Early in the second half in the 52nd, Llamas' attempt with the outside of her left foot from the right diagonal, flashed wide to the left. At 62:45, Llamas' right-sided cross found
Allyssa Larkin, but her glancing near-post header was off to the left as well. Another header off a cross from the right, this one by junior
Cassie Snow in the 69th, was leapt up and caught on the goal line by junior HSU net-minder Marisol Camargo.
Lenihan again went high for the 'Jacks from the right diagonal in the 70th. Then, within five minutes at 74:45, she provided HSU with the decisive goal. A deep ball over the top from within the visitors' own half was met by Lenihan, and she was able to knock it past the final Bronco defender and get into the penalty box on the right side. From right around the penalty spot, the Northern Colorado transfer lifted her right-footed shot up and over Williams and into the back of the net. Her fourth goal of the season is now tied for the team lead.
Lenihan's tally snapped the Broncos' six-game shutout stretch, which had matched the single-season program record from 2019 and 2014. Williams' career-best individual streaks also ended at six successive clean sheets and 654:44 of shutout soccer, the latter mark likely but unofficially another program standard. She collected a pair of saves.
CPP managed just a half-chance following the goal, as with under a minute to go, Llamas dribbled into the box from the right side, but her cross/shot mix was scooped up without issue by Camargo.
Drawing her first start as a Lumberjack, Camargo finished with a season-high six stops and posted her first shutout. The final shot margin was 12-6 in favor of the home side, which has still only been out-shot once this entire season.
Cal Poly Pomona plays at Kellogg Stadium one final time for the 2021 regular season on Senior Day this Sunday, Oct. 31, against northern rival Chico State (8-2-4, 4-1-3 CCAA). Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m., following the men's teams at 11:30 a.m. The Wildcats started out Friday one spot and one point ahead of CPP in fourth in the CCAA, and eighth in Wednesday's NCAA West Region poll.
Prior to that Senior Day kickoff, a total of 17 Broncos past and present will be recognized for their contributions to sixth-year head coach
