POMONA – The 22nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team returned home to Kellogg Arena in victorious fashion, defeating visiting San Francisco State in four sets on Friday night. Set scores were 25-12, 27-29, 25-22, 25-19.
The Broncos improved to 13-1 on the season and 6-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while San Francisco State suffered just its second loss of the season, falling to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA.
Cal Poly Pomona won its second straight match after suffering its first loss of the season last Friday in Los Angeles. The Broncos stormed out to an early match lead tonight, blasting the Gators by a 13-point margin in the first set. They scored 11 of the first 13 points in the match and capped the opening frame with three straight tallies.
The second set featured 11 ties and six lead changes, and Cal Poly Pomona had set point at 24-22 before SF State scored three straight points to get a set point of its own. Neither team could put the other away until the Gators got consecutive kills by Izzy Issak to break a 27-all tie and tie the match at one set apiece.
Another closely contested set followed in the third, and it was a seven-point run midway through for the Broncos that gave them a 16-9 lead. SF State got to within two points on multiple occasions, including as late as 24-22, before sophomore
Daisy Duke put the Gators away with a kill at set point.
Cal Poly Pomona then led from start-to-finish in the fourth set to finish off the victory to move into sole possession of second in the CCAA standings ahead of the Gators.
The Broncos had a very balanced offensive performance in Friday's win, with four players recording double figures in kills. Sophomore
Jazmyn Wheeler led Cal Poly Pomona with 14 kills, while Duke added 12, and sophomores
Jazminn Parrish and
Kaitlan Tucker finished with 11 apiece. Senior setter
Kira Zimmerman posted another double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs, while Parrish added 10 digs en route to a double-double of her own. Senior
Brynn Sherbert led the Broncos with 20 digs and Tucker led all players with five total blocks.
Issak finished with a match-high 17 kills for SF State, while Jessica Haynie had 14 kills and 14 digs. Brianna DeBoer led all players with 21 digs for the Gators.
The Broncos continue their three-match home stand on Saturday night, facing Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m. before taking on conference leader Cal State San Bernardino next Wednesday (Oct. 13) inside Kellogg Arena.
